the three cds and two vinyls currently rotating @ my home (whenever i'm not making musick): alva noto - prototypes (cd) - imho alva noto is one of the best of the clicks and cuts fraction. i love the funkyness of his minimal arrangements and the pure quality of the sounds... astrobotnia 1 - (cd) i wanna kill everyone, satan is good, satan is my pal" - they bring back some much needed fun into idm morton subotnick - touch/a sky of cloudless sulphur. (cd) - yes, i am very much into electroacoustics and i am a great fan of subotnick. although "the wild bull" and "silver apples on the moon" are better known, i prefer these two recordings (which are on one cd, together with "gestures" - unfortunately i have only the stereo-cd version, as there exists a 5.1 dvd version on mode records), especially the rythmic parts in "a sky..." they reach a fuckedupness and extatic density which i only encountered on some of coils best moments and the later ae stuff ae - gantz graf - well, we were not supposed to bring up ae again, but: i had the mp3s of this release for a while now, and although i LOVE the tracks, i never was completely satisfied with the sound... now i finally got the vinyl, and it sounds soooo much better (even than the cd, which i also listened to, to compare) it seems the vinyl was mastered much better and much more precise than the cd... hans platzgumer and catriona shaw - miss me lp - electronica meets rnb. coproduced by g.potutznik (g.deluxxe, etc.) and cowritten by platzgumer/shaw. a very nice lp, even if it took me some time to get into it. in the beginning i was irritated by the coldness... but now i love it. the future of popmuzik so, not being in highschool any longer did not change me being a nerd and trying to impress my teachers... lol, hidari At 16:46 23.08.2002 -0400, Oneaphex@aol.com wrote:

I'll say something about this.. I've had gantz graf for a while now. It wasn't until after hearing it on a good pair of headphones that I finally *really* enjoyed it. There is a bunch of things going on behind the noise, and it's really interesting. Much more than I noticed on first listen. I totally believe you that the vinyl sounds better. This track is really growing on me. I like the direction. conner

For sure... He's one of the few in the genre who masters so well the art of creating those, uh, precise "paths of tension". I sampled very short fragments of the recent "transform" at a store a while ago and that seemed even better, though I haven't bought it yet for some reason. (Actually, for a very precise reason...)

I've seen this mentioned several times on the list. I should probably check that out. How do the three releases compare? Is the situation similar to Pole where owning one of the three CDs pretty much suffices? In that case, which one would be preferable? Etc.

When it comes to Morton Subotnick, for me, there is a very strong dividing line separating the great from the awful. IMO, again: Silver Apples/Wild Bull goes in the great category. Return/Key to Songs goes in the awful category. From this, I induced the rule that early Subotnick is good and late Subotnick is bad. Which would seem to indicate that "Touch" (1969) would be good and would leave an aura of incertitude around "A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur" (1978) -- or perhaps I could infer that it is a merely acceptable piece... Per this rule, "Gestures" would be awful, being a very recent work (1998-2000). Any comments/further opinions on this? Maybe I should also point out an artist who has deeply impressed me recently: Janek Schaefer. It's not IDM (more in the microsound vein) but what the heck. He creates music with multi-armed turntables of his own fabrication. But that interesting factoid is not the point; the point is that he makes fantastic music, warmly atmospheric, with very nicely interoperating multiple layers. Yada yada yada... I don't have time to describe it more precisely. Do check it out. ("Pulled Under" on AudiOh! -- and if you can catch him live, don't miss the occasion. I first heard his music live at Mutek and it was a revelation.) g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yes, transform is great, too. i love all the stuff by alva noto. and i love his label raster noton. i have 9 out of the 12 20 to 2000 releases and they are great as well. especially coil's and ilpo vaisanen's.

this, imo, is quite true. subotnick really excels on the buchla synth, with his early compositions. some of the later ones (including gestures) do have some interesting aspects sometimes, but i do not consider them great music. i have yet to check out more recent stuff. i listened to "the key to songs" once, and did not really like it. i rarely listen to gestures. usually i just listen to one of the other two pieces, with "a sky.." being my absolute favourite. it has amazing rythmic structures, and, imo, the same qualities as his earlier work. great sounds from the buchla, and a great vibraphone part in it (it seems, the vibraphone was recorded, processed and then used in the composition aplying tape-cut techniques (but this is just "some" information, and might be untrue. i really have to obtain the dvd version, though... (and the player, and the 5.1. set to go with it....;) i should add, that i got heavily into subotnick, after interviewing richard devine, who told me that he "tries to compose according to the same principles and aesthetics as morton subotnick, but with beats, where he uses melody"

in my excitement about how beautiful (or beauiful, for those of you playing the 'spot the typo' home game), i didn't mention the reasons i like these so much... on the customer service ep, the tracks are progressive without seeming contrived or sickly sweet...they just tug at my heartstrings and make me want to dance around in my room as though enchanted or energized by the skipping beats and sparkling synth...lots of clicky prettiness, but also some complexity and depth, and even a little triphop, and some plaid-like funkiness. the cottage industries compilations are an excellent collection of lots of dense, clearly thought-out, polished IDM. some tracks are harsher, and some are silkier, but all round out well and offer a lot of hooks for your mind, whether you're paying attention or not. cheers, rachel (aka dj pie) -- piesarenice.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Here's 3 poops (procrastinating at work) ... Mum - Finally We Are No One This album is just really sweet sounding all the way around. So sweet I wonder if it even qualifies as IDM or being experimental, because it's just pretty and melodic and quaint. I guess because they use wierd sounds like a zippo ligher opening and closing, and other wierd found sounds that it does qualify though. Hell being from Iceland probably automatically qualifies this due to the "Bjork Factor". Piano, great vocals and strings and stuff. All around awesome album. American Gigolo (the DJ Gigolo Comp) I know I am a lamo for even mentioning it but that's why I love this CD so much. It's super trashy and has some great electro "standards" and super indulgent (but good and functional) mixing and makes me feel extra evil listening to this while driving down the 280 at 90mph. I feel cooler having a song that just says "Dance like a machine" over and over all euro sounding. I turn it way up and try to imagine I am that guy who tells Homer and Bart: "Funboys - go get a room!" after retrieving his stolen painting in that Fightin' Hellfishes episode of the Simpsons. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele I am putting this in here because I have been listening to this album constantly in my car (even though it's a couple years old.) If you have access to it just listen to the RZA on the first track. This album has some really incredibly wierd production and completely amazing lyrics. Yeah it's pretty typical Wu-Tang posturing / storytelling stuff but I think Ghostface has a really wierd way with words and he's candid to the point of being really, really bizarre and funny at the same time. I wish the RZA would just experiment more and more because he has this great experimental spirit in a lot of his stuff but the newer Wu Tang stuff isn't as rough/raw. np: Metamatics - Dope for the Robot (Neo Ouija Rules!) Current favorite release: Bauri's first full length release "Slacker Journal" is completely infectious for many reasons. First off the melodies through-out the entire album are gorgeously woven around delicate sometimes aggressive rhythm programming. Much in the same vain as Funktroung, Bauri has a remarkable sence of progression and space with each compostion on this album. Subtle builds, intricate poly rhythms, layering of fragmented static and patient textures fade in over time. All of these elements combine to form what I think is one of the strongest IDM releases of the year. The other beauty of "Slacker Journal" is that it doesn't wear on the ear. If anything it's soothing mood begs recollection and another listen. Simply put, Beautiful!!!! Current favorite label: Neo Ouija: Lee Norris (aka Metamatics, Norken) has an amazing ear for talent. So far I am yet to hear a disapppointing release from Neo Ouija or Norris. Much like Norris' former label Clear, N.O. has crafted a particular sound and esthetic that I am yet to see happen with any other budding IDM labels. The art work is superbly representative of the music and they have been consistant and prolific with there releases. Some of the N.O. artists include: Bauri, Geiom, Metamatics, Sica, Kettel, Funckarma, Sence and Accelera Deck. If you're interested in N.O. but don't know where to start check out the "Cottage Industries" compilation. It's a great sampler of the labels sound and general philosophy. www.neoouija.co.uk/

current favorite idm release. Quench- cdr with the s/t 12" on Aim, the Cenik 12", and the OM-XH 12" Luke Slater- Wireless (so many different styles on this one, and all of them done very well. I love the hard bangin' noisy techno tracks, and the darker ambientish ones too.) Gridlock- Engram 12" (They continue their tradition of top quality cruchiness with spooky synths) Mochipet cdr American Breakbeat Rebuilt (although the lame tracks outnumber the good ones on this one) Funkstorung- Appetite for Disctruction (finally picked this one up on vinyl and it sounds SOOO good) Also just picked up the Phako 12"- a bit more minimal than what I remember of his compilation tracks, but still very blippy and glitchy.

refreshing thread, so much so that I will briefly lift the veil of lurk-mode. Releases: Ambulance 7" - Planet-Mu (particularly 'Snakes'): Definitely on of the most refreshing things I have heard in a while. Production is spot-on, sporting an extremely 'full' sound of rocktronica (I love making up genres that sound really stupid). Really, it's more like an audio puzzle, you know, like they started with a proper tune, then pulled these little pieces out, pitch shifted the melodies (think audio-rubberbands) and moved them around to create one of the years freshest singles. Played 'Snakes' almost everynight before bed since I got it. Awwwww.... Yunx - The Interview EP - Yunx They seem to be getting closer and closer to reaching their sound with every release. Fuck. Reminiscent of old B12 with that dope 'we aren't from Detroit but we can make wicked tunes regardless' attitude. Yunx are (and have been) blurring the lines of what dance music can (and should) be for a while, and this record is merely another testament to that. This 12" is quite a bit more chilled out than previous efforts with a couple downtempo/dubby numbers on it. Funny I have never seen any talk of them on this list. Consider this your wake-up call. Rjd2 - Deadringer - Def Jux I try to avoid comparisons, but this album reeks of the quality of DJ Shadow. A nice mixture between Endtroducing and Brainfreeze! comes to mind, but better. Rjd2 offered up a nice counter-point to the last El-P album here; a bit more lighthearted, nostalgic and pretty and all that. Can't say I care too much for the MC's, but there are only 3 tracks with flows over top. This man is deadly with a sampler... Underrated labels: Phthalo, Obliq italic. -- _______________________________________________ Download the free Opera browser at http://www.opera.com/ Free OperaMail at http://www.operamail.com/ Powered by Outblaze --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

lately: anything i can find by Quinoline Yellow (ie Smak, compilation tracks from Cottage Industries, RND .639925237668 and i think theres a Japanese comp too from Com.A et al)... EU - Tuner ep - i had not listened to any of the so-called Ae clones from the former USSR until about three months ago, and i have to say i was stunned by this and most of Fizzarum's stuff, esp. Ursa Majoris... Bitstream - Retreat Pod 12", Incubator 12", Stream 1 7" - believe any hype you hear about these guys, they are all that, electro-y idm that kicks ass... Phako - Bolnes Shipyards & Engineering Co ltd - the first track is IMHO mediocre, maybe it'll grow on me, but the rest is great. errrr, i should say the 1st track on the 12" cuz the cd's different... Luke Vibert - mix from One World - goes all over the place, some of his own stuff from planet mu, teh 808 State remix by AFX, great electro-ish stuff, old school drumnbass, goes from that "Johnny" track to one about "Ricky," laughed my ass off first time i listened to it... MEAM - from the Skam Records One World special - the M, the E, the A, the M... who the heck are these guys??? Wevie Stonder - Drawing on other peoples heads - "that was the sound of MURDER..." Squarepusher - Big Loada & Port Rhombus - Port Rhombus was the first idm record (as in vinyl) i owned, bought it at Republic Records (RIP) in Toronto in 96?; and Big Loada, my fav sqpshr record, my first copy sounds like poo from playing it on my old crappy turntable too much, luckily i got a white label of it from Warp Mart in one of my orders so it was like the second coming :)))) my fav new label: Pause2 ok, thats enough -- JA --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

things lately i've been hooked on: anthony rother "hacker" (psi49net) no one does electro the way mr. rother does. the psicity comp on his label a few months ago was killer, but all of the best tracks were his own. this album supports that by offering up a really nice slab of digital german electro. "dualis" is totally amazing, to pick a favorite track off of this... although really, the whole thing is excellent. kid606 "why i love life" 3" (tigerbeat6) i prefer this style to his mashup stuff... it just sounds a little more thoughtful to me. either way, i like this quite a bit. those who liked "gq on the eq" will probably like this, too. v/a "international deejay gigolos vol. 6" (gigolo) i don't care if it's a trend, i really like the gigolo camp. they were doing this before it was considered trendy, anyway, and will probably keep on doing it when the "electroclash" marketing phenomenon has faded away. 2 full CDs, some exclusive tracks... running from total new-wave redux (twins, crossover) to harder techno (vitalic) to electropop (tommie sunshine) and a lot more in between. a great intro to the label... unmixed. i still think the most reliable labels out there right now are kompakt and bpitch control, despite neither one of them being especially "IDM" although bpitch certainly has crossovers on a regular basis. i'm rarely disappointed by any release on kompakt (i faithfully pick up all of them now), and pretty much the same with bpitch. perlon is also pretty hot, in my opinion, although their releases seem to be even more consistent (meaning a lot of it starts to sound similar). i also just pulled back out my tujiko noriko cd on mego and it's sounding mighty tasty to me right now. matt

Add N to (X) - Revenge of the Black Regent I know this is an older release, but I just started listening to Add N to (X) this summer. The title track rocks my lame ass hard. 3 analog synths and a live drummer make for some very energetic tracks. Makes me dance in my underpants. Midwest Product - Specifics Ya, saw these folks mentioned on the list and I am digging this very much. Someone already called it indie rock meets electro, and that sums it up quite nicely. -Zach --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The Fennesz / While split ep on Fat Cat, which was mentioned in an earlier thread... a really nice set of clicks, drones, hums and suggestions of melody. It also has quite a nice range of moods and feels, albeit within the usual boundaries of the style - there's rather little bouncy energy or righteous anger. Also, though it isn't really IDM, the Programme 7", also on Fat Cat, is lovely. Sort of garagey post rock, shouted in french. Also DJ Hell's Suicide Commando, which is pretty old but rather superb. I've spent years trying to find more records that sound like this - does anyone have any ideas? This is a good thread :-) d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

bpitch control, despite neither one of them being especially "IDM" i think any discussion of interesting new electronica would have to consider W. Voight's music, and his choices expressed through Kompakt. same with bpitch. idm is a list, not a style of music, and it should retain a wide scope. guess i'm getting my back up about how skam-o-centric it's getting round here lately... k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
