Melanie,
I agree that the term idm seems to apply to some music labeled as idm, and
some music that doesn't seem to fit the label. To some extent, the reason
is probably our external labeling of the music. I think that this type of
compartmentalization may some some uses (ex. idm serves as a title to put on
a forum to discuss various musics that somehow fall into a certain
ficticious category or genre). People on this list have some stake in the
propagation of the music being discussed--they like it (whether to dance or
otherwise--i like to dance;), or they want to promote it for some commercial
purposes (promoters, ad people, genuine fans, or all of the above).

First off, I don't know who coined the term "Intelligent Dance Music"
but it seems malappropriate... a) It seems a catch-all phrase for a genre
where half of the music is not danceable
