March 11th, 2002: The big day is here - our first release is now available! It's a wonderful album by ARC called "Repercussion", and you can find out more about it by scrolling down to the bottom of this message. Initial subscriber copies are about to go into the mail, but it's definately not too late to sign up for a series subscription if you haven't done so already. Just visit the Piehead website (www.pieheadrecords.com) for more info. A release party for "Repercussion" will be taking place on Thursday, March 21st at Rancho Relaxo, 300 College St. in Toronto. ARC will be performing live along with fellow Piehead artists hellothisisalex and naw (appearing under the name Dropfile), and Piehead's Greg Clow will be spinning sounds before and between the live sets. Admission will be $5 (or $15 for admission and a copy of the CD), and series subscribers will be on the guest list. In other news: recording of our second release, "The Canadian Spelling Program" by hellothisisalex, is nearing completion. An info page for the album, hopefully including an MP3 sample or two, should be online in the next week or so. We've also received some preliminary material for our summer releases from Multiplex and Your Favorite Horse, both of which sound mighty fine. A short track entitled "Shot" from YFH's album is currently available on their website - visit www.scarcelight.com and click on the Radio Esoterica section to check it out. That's the scoop for now - and here, as promised, is the complete info about PIE001: ---------- ARC/Aidan Baker Repercussion 1st volume in the Piehead Records 2002 limited edition series Llimited to 311 copies Release Date: March 11, 2002 Tracks 1. Transform (13:14) 2. Arise (9:45) 3. Writhe (12:17) 4. Slight Return/Raze (20:36) Cover image and MP3 samples can be found at http://www.pieheadrecords.com/releases/pie001.html ARC formed spontaneously in the Fall of 1999 at a performance at The Ambient Ping, Toronto's weekly live ambient series. Aidan Baker & Chris Kukiel had never met Richard Baker before he came up on stage and started playing with them. They decided to capitalize on this idea of newness, freshness & improvization, and resolved not to rehearse in order that each performance would be individual, unique, spontaneous... ARC have since played at many of Toronto's clubs and performed in Montreal & Chicago. ARC's sound is centred on the melodic loops, textures & samples provided by Aidan's heavily-effected guitar. This is overlaid with Richard & Chris' tribal-esque rhythms provided by various percussive instruments; drum kit, djembe, tabla, wood blocks. With this combination, the trio creates a rolling tapestry of both rhythmic & ambient sound, a sound simulataneously prim(ev)al & avant-garde. In Sept 2000, ARC independently released their self-titled debut CD recorded live and compiled from performances at The Ambient Ping & The 360 Club. July 2001 saw the release of their album "TWO" on Chicago's Mathbat Records. This disc features two live, completely unedited performances from Lee's Palace & Holy Joe's in Toronto. A split disc with UK ambient/noise artist Ashfordaisyak was released in Oct 2001 on Menschenfiend Productions. "Repercussion" features a core of improvised ARC material recorded live at The Ambient Ping in January of 2002, with subsequent layers and/or extensions overdubbed by ARC guitarist Aidan Baker. Expanding on the usual guitar and percussion instrumentation (adding woodwinds, strings, kitchen utensils), "Repercussion" possesses a fuller - and a somewhat more angular & harsher - sound than previous ARC releases. AIDAN BAKER is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, educated at McGill University in Literature & Religious Studies. He divides his time between writing & performing music with ARC and as a solo artist. RICHARD BAKER is an accomplished percussionist & aspiring ethno-musicologist, informally educated at University of Toronto. CHRISTOPHER KUKIEL is a percussionist & DJ, educated at Ontario College of Art & Design in Lithograhy. He currently divides his time between playing, spinning (as DJ Subterranean) & various fine arts.
