Subject:: [idm] BOC Extreme Contradiction

These guys completely contradicted themselves in the two interviews that were recently talked about. In the XLR8R interview, Mike says about the forthcoming album, "We want to do this one at our own pace and only deliver it when we think we¹ve got something that is absolutely perfect, with no flaws." Then in the NME interview he says, "It's okay to be imperfect - in fact the imperfections are where the magic is. To us, perfect music sounds sterile and dead. The tunes we write are imperfect, the sounds are imperfect, even the artwork. I can't listen to perfect music, it bores me. We actually put a lot of effort into making things rough and difficult and noisy, even more so on this than on the last album." When I read things like this it makes me think that their philosophies have no credibility. I wish I hadn't read that. Well how old was the XLR8R interview... Because you have to realize and artists direction and concept can change a lot during or before the recording process.... Yes, agreed. Not to worry...I'm enjoying the music to its fullest. I think it would have been best had they not done either interview. The music is mysterious enough that people are able to draw their own conclusions about the hidden meanings, without being told what to look for. But I still believe that if you're going to come up with a story, at least stick to it. If not, people like myself will call them out on it. I think there's a pretty huge difference between purposely making something imperfect for the reasons they gave, and releasing slop that has unintentional screw ups etc.

My comment was really more of an observation than anything else. In fact, it somewhat adds to the intrigue of the duo. I liked the couple of comments I read about how maybe their idea of a perfect album is something that is slightly imperfect. Personally, I don't think the words perfect and music should ever be spoken in the same sentence. There is nothing perfect about music of any kind unless there is something relative to compare it to. And even then, I'm still not convinced that it makes sense.
