So I hear he's having an album coming out sometime (heh) on, I think it was musik aus strom? Is that wrong? Also, I know about the "still delayed" EP on Sonic Therapy - any way I can help get that out? Any other news about Proem? "Burn Plate No. 1" is my favorite release from1999 - best culmination of "that sound" I've ever heard (whatever that means). Does anyone know if new material will be anything like that? I don't want to sound sarcastic, but - loan me $500 to $1000 and we could see it really soon. I hate to whine about my shitty year on the list again, but basically I spent about 4 months in 2000 unemployed due to various stupid decisions, asshole people, fucked up companies, and general idiots. And no, I'm not claiming that not of it was my fault. Some good chunk of it was. But a lot of it wasn't up to me either. Anyway, I have a job now, but I'm not making very much money. I've got a company that claims they want to hire me, and then institued a hiring freeze on their helpdesk. Or something. Maybe. I get a different story every time I call the recruiter. And oh yes, I get to deal with recruiters, the greatest source of evil and idiocy. So I'm waiting on a company whose name rhymes with "Snoretel" to hire me. In the meantime, I've done a few other interviews to get a job that pays more in line with my previous salary requirements. So something may give soon, assuming the company doesn't hire me and then fire me two days later. WHEE! Have I mentioned fuck corporate America yet? I'm also working towards getting little pieces of paper so companies have to treat me better nad give me more money instead of making me be a phone monkey and treat me like shit. That and I'm working to start up my own business if at all possible. So it may be a while yet.

'Socially Inept' (Merck) [2004] is a little more 'refined' and more advanced melodically, but still pretty sharp beatwise. I tried to send this to the list earlier today but the list won't accept mail sent from my webmail interface for some reason. First, I concur on the Proem recommendations so far - Negative & Socially Inept are great albums, I think. As in, I really enjoyed them, and recommend them to someone who liked the LiveMD, not as in I think they are "great" like the Mona Lisa or something. However, if you're into the liveMD, and would like to try some more before you buy, check out www.proemland.com - Rich has some of his other livesets up there for free download, mostly in Ogg Vorbis format, but also a few older ones in MP3 I think. I would also highly recommend his "Among Others" album on n5MD, which you can download from n5MD's new download service, for $9.99. All his stuff pales in comparison to his first album Burn Plate No. 1. All the stuff to follow is nice in a floaty tinkly easy listening idm sorta way, but at least on the first album it sounds like he had some musical statement to make. I haven't even bothered picking up his last couple releases 'cause now it seems like he's gonna be stuck in that easy listening idm rut forever. 'Negativ' (Merck) [2001] is good - beats are pretty crunchy and in your face. 'Socially Inept' (Merck) [2004] is a little more 'refined' and more advanced melodically, but still pretty sharp beatwise. Both recommended. alan

The couple times I've listened to Proem I've thought the same thing. Lots of slow pads and crunchy beats. nothing really stood out to me, even compared to other artists that employ the same thing (like Phonem who even has a similar name). Those other artists seem to put more of their own spin on it. Proem just seems to be going through the motions. Of course, I think his fans would argue that he goes through those motions *really well*. Which is valid -- it's ok to strive for a certain sound that fits well within what people are expecting, and do it really well. I can see how someone would think that, but I think he has his own Proemy spin on it and I really like it. I would apply the same description to Phonem, Arovane, Funckarma, and a load of others. Boring to me, sounds like they're trying to be Autechre. But lately I've been getting into Funckarma, like, all their stuff back to Parts and everything. And it always bored me before. Just goes to show it's pretty much all subjective. It's we who grow and hear and sometimes forget how to hear what we once loved. I agree. He's seems to have taken a recognisable generic template and embroidered over it in such a way as to create his own 'voice'.

I don't agree. They've all taken the early-AE template and tweaked it differently. I would argue that none of them actually sound anything like Autechre. I would say that Arovane very quickly developed his own unmistakeable signature style, likewise Funckarma (and Quench for that matter). As for Phonem, I would argue less for the merit and individuality of his work. Point being, all of them work from within an established (sonic) framework; this is quite normal in many (artistic) areas, where genre features drive the production of something individual but recognisably belonging to a tradition. I guess what some of the posters have been saying about Proem is that they find that his music incarnates those formal genre features a little too 'perfectly'.

Interestingly, I've found recent Funckarma output (on EP) to be harder to appreciate the more they seem to have explored a more personalised style. 'DemSongzByWe' is particularly difficult to digest. 'Smizm' goes down a little easier, but for me the earlier 'Bourbon Sounds' and 'Parts' knock 'em into a cocked hat. And now, I shall weigh in. (whee!) There was a time to me when Proem's stuff was alive and vital and sounded good. The live shows, to me, were even better, because he was playing unreleased music and I liked the songs even more. You knew when you saw Proem that at least it wasn't going to be a completely familiar experience, even if his "live" aspect is him clicking a mouse and smoking. I saw him live at SXSW, and frankly - he had it and he lost it. It was pretty dull, didn't seem much of a progression from what I'd been hearing when I left off listening. Discl(aimer|osure): I was going to put out a Proem 12" for a while. It was later released as that MD, minus the... Colongib remix? Proem has always been a bit of a caustic guy, and after a certain point he started completely ignoring me instead of at least treating me as a friend. Yes! I couldn't agree more here. I know I was talking badly about his newest album a bit ago and I failed to mention that Burn Plate No. 1 is excellent. As is/was all of that early Hydrant and Sprout material. Anyone remember The Brittle Ones CDR on Sprout? What an excellent little CDR that was. I'm going to chime in and show some words of support for proem. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the most consistant artists out there. I have yet to hear something from him that I wasn't completely impressed with. I guess for me it's that his music hits me at both an intellectual and emotional level. In terms of the cliche' statement, that's about as valid as saying that every rock bad is a cliche because they use they use guitar,bass, and drums. There may be numerous other artists out there doing similar things, but I think that Proem does it among the best in genre. Now on to the personal slagging. I've dealt with Proem quite a bit and I've always found him to be really cool and very professional. He's always had a great attitude in the projects he's been involved with for component and I've heard good things about him from the other labels labels that deal with him. There are plenty of far shittier artists you all could be ragging on! good. The live shows, to me, were even better, because he was playing unreleased music and I liked the songs even more. You knew when you saw Proem that at least it wasn't going to be a completely familiar experience, even if his "live" aspect is him clicking a mouse and smoking.

Proem has always been a bit of a caustic guy, and after a certain point he started completely ignoring me instead of at least treating me as a friend. So, if you're big on the fact you took Psych 101, you can argue that's what would motivate these feelings.

Uh.. Yeah so? Isn't it what we all like? Isn't it why we all subscribe to this list? I find half the music discussed here isn't really what i'd call IDM. Dubby minimal techno drony rock ain't IDM. I like Proem. Most of his stuff is awesome. My favorite Proem track could be Drool Master off the album Burn Plate no.1 even if its a bit dated. I think the sound quality has improved a lot in his last albums.

I'd not heard significant amounts of Freeform before Wildcat, but surely mild Tom Waits pastiche (Gone and Left the City) isn't /completely/ generic. The rest is slightly more par for the course, although Skim + Skitter is impressively well done. What would you suggest that's in a similar vein / has a similar feel but less 'going throught the motions?'
