This is semi-off topic, but what is the best program to convert text to audio? There are a slew of them out there and I KNOW someone in this list knows the best one. I'm looking for [reasonably] realistic voice and [reasonable] speed for larger text files. Also, voice to text recommendations would be appreciated as well. I'm thinking for term papers. Thanks a lot everybody. gzvp __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! PC or Mac? PC, I like Analog-X's say-it. http://www.analogx.com ... it's free Actually, strangely enough, the best text to speech converter i've found was a little joke i got in my email from a coworker (corporate humor, you know?). It looked kinda like a speak and spell. I'll see if I can dig it up and email it if you'd like. It's PC only though. Let me know. tell acre ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr. Gozra Von Peebles" <gozravp@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2002 3:28 PM Subject: [idm] [OT] Text to Voice

you could try 'stu003 text plugin' for winamp (www.winamp.com) but it requires to download 'microsoft text-to-speech engine v5.0' (at microsoft site) ~150MB(!!!) (i couldn`t check it - i`ve got only cable modem and probably the most expensive telecommunication prizes in europe...fucking monopoly (TP SA)... ) 'say-it' from analogx is nice especially with their 'vocoder' (free!!) , kicks ass... it would be nice to hear about other software like this on the net (preferably freeware)... Text Aloud MP3 is not too bad. Has less of the "Speak 'n Spell" sound and more of the kind of vibe one gets with more recent speech synthesis software. Its kinda like the sound on the talking computer track on Radiohead/OK computer, or on (I think) track 2 or so on the new-ish Air album. In any case, it looks to be shareware, and sound not too bad. It sounds thoroughly comprehensible, but thoroughly electronic. It seems be set up to dump largish text files (at least larger than with SayIt) to MP3s. So lotsa chatty goodness to be had.
