I think what Pedro was talking about was that ninjatune.net used to have at least 50 shows all available in Real Audio in their Solid Steel section under the Past Shows Archive pic link. There are still tracklistings of a lot of past shows there, but no longer any links to real audio. It's good and all to give us a taste with 8 shows, but what are we supposed to do when we're hooked? :) Cheers

that's true - we did. the company that was serving/hosting them for us isnt really working at the moment & we're looking at improving it. as broadband charges in the uk arent ahem cheap. there is a site which we'll dig up where mixes are posted, people are always trading mixes on ninja forum & there's a group uploading there own mixes somwhere...nethed At 1:24 pm +0000 28/10/01, Helix Tradesman wrote:

I don't want to pee on anyone's parade, but I found the DJ Food Solid Steel album INCREDIBLY disappointing. The mix that you speak of (Mirror In The Bathroom/Mask) is actually really simplistic - it's a drum and bass track that has no discernable melodies in it whatsoever, and thus is bound to sound pretty good with anything that it's beat-matched with. What's more, there's a big spiel on the cover about how one should 'not think for a second that this was made with just two decks and a computer', which I think is a total and utter crock. Hell, there's even a point in the mix where one record just stops and another begins, which I find *really* lazy. This would probably lead on to a good stream - what do you folks think makes for good and bad DJing? Myself, I like records to actually merge together both ryhthmically and melodically, which is not that hard at all with a bit of effort. I think that DJs have raw materials to work with, and have to present something amazing with these limited resources, without having to resort to too much trickery. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some 'Back to the land, away with ye and your machines, Satan!' sort of guy, but I do like to see limited tools used to their full effect before graduating to the next level of technology, a level that is often superfluous. Well, that's the 4-album deal with ninja down the tubes... Wow, 2 posts in 2 days! Cheers, folks. Please disagree to your hearts content. marciablaine.cjb.net forthcoming: e.p. on Dalriada inclusion on Benbecula "Music Volume 2" inclusion on Law & Auder "I Am:Bient" inclusion on Struktur _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I thought the Solid Steel mix cd was quite good. It had some familiar stuff and some more obscure stuff I'd never heard. I thought the mixing was superb and totally creative. I'm not sure what you expect from a DJ mix. Maybe you could suggest an amazing mix CD that will blow the Solid Steel thing out of the water. If you listen to the Solid Steel CD next to the DJ Spooky mix CD that came out at the same time, it should be even more obvious that a lot of talent went into that disc. That DJ Spooky is the laziest most boring mix ever! -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "production unit" <productionunit@hotmail.com> Date: Saturday, February 9, 2002 1:29 pm Subject: [idm] solid steel

I too must agree with Aaron, I think that it's one of the finest DJ mixes I've heard in quite some time...especially tracks 16, 17 and 18 (riffing on a drum intruction record, Blackalicious' alphabet workout, and Four Tet's Glass Head)...very well mixed, and the flow just has that intangible "rightness". It makes me want to dance, and trust me, I _don't_ dance. :P Paul Aaron D Meyers <adm226@nyu.edu> wrote: I thought the Solid Steel mix cd was quite good. just to keep the controversy flowing, this monday night, new flesh will be in the mix, but it wont be like any other mix cuz they went in & did some fresh new things. does the list remember when journeys by djs by coldcut came out? that was 1995. regardless of the fact i now work for ninja, i didnt then & it was (& still is imho) one of the most creative mix cd's i've ever heard. what good mix cd compilations do you play over & over again? nH -- SOLID STEEL: Coldcut & Friends Live RADIO - BBC London 94.9FM, Monday, Midnight to 2AM UK Time Live WEB - BBC London Website http://www.bbc.co.uk/london Web ARCHIVE - Groovetech.com http://www.groovetech.com/solidsteel LOCAL TIME: http://www.worldtimezone.com SOLID STEEL presents DJ Food & DK: Now Listen! 1.10.01 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

To be honest, I didn't think the Solid Steel mix was terrible or anything (I think it was better than most things you hear), but, coming from the stable that created Coldcut's Journeys by DJ set, I was expecting something just as good. In that mix, When Harold Budd mixes into the acapella thingy, into Photek's into the 90s, it really astonished me and changed the way I thought about what a DJ can do and acheive. I suppose it might have been unrealistic to expect anything to top that, but I thought that if anyone could, it would have been the Ninja posse once again. The solid steel album doesn't have bad songs on it, nor is it badly beat-matched in any way, but I hoped for a little more interaction between the records. I mean, the Jeru the Damaja track has no tune in it, so would have gone really well with any jazzy track of similar speed. If, by contrast, you mix 'Sunvibes' by DJ Food with 'The Lie-In King' by The Irresistible Force, both records actually go together in order to create a beautiful, soothing tune which both fuses and *improves* both of its costituent parts. I suppose this is what I think DJing is capable of, and what the Coldcut set (and despairingly few others) manages to reach. Incidentally, both those tunes are on ninja tune, one of my all-time favourite labels by quite a long way, so I'm not hating or anything. As you can tell, I'm really anal about my DJing, so please excuse my ranting. Cheers folks, Yer old Dad.
