[idm] style groups of similar artists

I was toying around with the idea of a "musical spectrum" of styles, kinda like a colorwheel for music, except that it would have to be three dimensional (maybe 4-dimensional?) and it would be too complex, really. For me, anyway... Something along the lines of what you get when you play around with Amazon's music recommendations system, but "definitive" (ha!). OK, so this is really stupid, I know, but I thought someone might be amused by the tiny sampling of 'idm' artists in "style groups" I came up with. Obviously the part that has hip-hop type stuff is just ignorant on my part, and the rest isn't that amazing either, so just don't take me seriously: Four Tet Fridge Tortoise Savath & Savalas Delarosa & Asora Telefon Tel Aviv OutKast Anti-Pop Consortium cLOUDDEAD Prefuse 73 Machine Drum Syndrone Funckarma L'Usine ICL Phonem Arovane Ulrich Schnauss? Manual? M?m E*Vax Isan Solvent Lowfish Lali Puna Broadcast Stereolab ... Fun, huh! I didn't really know where to put any of the "big names" like BoC or Autechre ... and I'm just realizing that there'd have to be a whole group for Venetian Snares & Otto Von Schirach & Richard Devine and... Doesn't AllMusic do something like this already? They have a 'see also' section for each artist (although I think Jean Michel Jarre is there in Autechre's listing, ahem......) and music maps, which do a pretty good job of categorizing genres while realising that each one doesn't exist in a vacuum. Nope, Autechre's listing is unsullied by the likes of Jean Michel Jarre -- though he's not far off as an influence. ;> Anyway, we're also working on different kinds of links: instead of just Similar Artists, the site could eventually offer more abstract kinds of soundalikes (the "See Also" column on the right-hand side is a bit of a preview to this). Instead of showing just what we here pick as being similar to Artist A, it would use more abstract categories to show links we wouldn't have thought of.
