Just wondering if anyone here knew of a killer set of tunes to drift off into the land of nod to?!? I guess i'm talking about the gentler stuff but it doesn't have to be just ambient.. Boards of Canada's music is one of my current favourites and is relatively up beat but still dreamy enough to really envelop you in sound whilst never getting to aggressive as to jolt you and really wake you up again.. I would suggest Biosphere or Hazard. Lackluster might work. A track I discovered recently that is so totally serene is the B-side to Abfahrt Hinwil's single in the Expanding Records EVS 7" singles series [reviewed in the next issue of Grooves! ;) ]. One of the most beautiful tunes I have heard in a long time, quite brilliant. Unfortunately, it's only one track. I agree with you, Lull is excellent music to fall asleep to. Really dark and antmospheric. Man, I know alot of you guys are gonna laugh at me, but... Listen to "Deep Breakfast" by Ray Lynch. Even though it's not IDM, I feel he had A LOT of pre-IDM feel to his music. I've been really into old chill out stuff lately, and have been having a lot of fun just tracking down anything that Mixmaster Morris likes. On his Mixmag Live cd he did in 96, there's a really epic ambient journey type track by Barry Human, called Beauty. I can't believe that this, well, beautiful track is completely obscure on the net. I've found almost everything else off of that mix cd on Audiogalaxy. Can anyone tell me anything about "Barry Human"? Zammuto's "Solutiore of Stareau," Disk 1, is perfect for this. I use it all the time. This might come out sounding wrong, but when I'm pretty drunk and tired, I put in Phonem's Hydro Electric. I've praised this quite a bit as far as sobriety is concerned, and I can praise it quite a bit as far as inebriation is concerned. Great album either way. I usually can't fall asleep to music of of any kind, but this is an exceptional exception. quick reviews Brothomstates - Qtio: I find it strange that Warp would release this bland and ordinary album. The best parts of it are good because they remind me of Autechre. Thats about it. I'm surprised at how well it is being recieved on and off the list by non-reviewers. I attribute this to the fact that new IDM fans are the ones who voice themselves the most. Venetian Snares + Speedranch - Making Orange Things: Oh I needed this. I didn't really have anything like this in my collection, and boy does it hit the spot at certain times. UNBORNBABY!!!! Really fast, "breakcore" mania, I guess. Anyway, if you're gonna give yourself a self-applied migraine, this is the way to do it. Phoenicia - Radoom Roomet: this woulda been good four years ago. LFO - Frequencies: I consider this techno(cat puke, mmm-tissk). I guess mabye you had to be there. Gescom - Keynell: Most of you who would appreciate this already know who you are. If you like tracks like the last off of the second disc of Tri Rep++, you will prolly like this. I myself really appreciate this, mabye not so much to listen to often, but every once in a while because the structure is fantastic, it feels like architecture. Worth the 5-7 bucks just for awesome 4th track. Aphex - Drukqs Promo: I know if its either good or great. Didn't hit me like the good stuff from RDJ, but I prolly need headphones, because it is so dense. I'm gonna wait till the cd comes out to pull out the headphones for this oh-so-important one(not sarcastic). ps: I'm not gonna get Drukqs on the 22nd because I live in the land of the easily televisionally-enraptured. Soothing? They're full of tension, angularities, etc... when they're not downright savage! Maybe you're thinking of the "night music" movement of the 4th quartet...? But even that gets pretty hot and tense... Maybe the interpretation(s) you've heard of them is (are) to fault? :) I'm surprised no one has mentioned Microstoria (_snd) in this thread. That's what instantly popped in my mind when reading this thread. Word. The soundtrack itself is rather repetitive when you examine the individual tracks, but some of them are simply lovely. 'No Swinging The Club in the Car' is my personal favorite. Another thing that interests me about this is that apparently most of the ambient drones were made with an electric guitar.
