Hello, I was thinking the other day about certain albums that really impressed me the first time I heard them. It seems that every so often I hear something that sounds incredibly different and "new". I imagine some of this has to do with not being familiar with certain sub-genres, etc. I also think there are certain albums that just amaze you, irregardless of your music knowledge. So, here's a few that really affected me (in no order). Sigur Ros-Ágætis Byrjun Radiohead-OK Computer Pole-1 Autechre-Chiastic Slide Arab Strap-Philophobia Fennesz-Endless Summer These are not my favorite albums, just ones that really caught me off guard with their unique-ness. I don't mean to start a dumb thread. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this. there have been so many...so many turned out to be one night stands...short and random mornings after: "white album" beatles : i was twelve...the weary bitterness of this album...pop mixed with crap. I didn't understand why it sounded new at the time. the sound of the sixties dying. "switched on bach" walter carlos : at the time all those sounds were astonishing. then I learned how quickly synth sounds get old. "switched on bach" is still engagingly quirky, but seems like some old gizmo from the attic. I think it was already mentioned, but I must say that Aphex's RDJ album is one of the "newest" sounds albums produced. And from what I've heard of Drukqs, it still will be for a time to come. At least for me. Some of Autechre's stuff sounds very new, particularly Envane, perhaps because its a bit minimal and is very clear. At any rate listen to RDJ on some really good headphones. I just Drukqs today from a good guy out in NYC who got it as an "advance"....when is the release date set for? If anyone isnt sure about the artwork and sound.... There are several no-turning-back records I have heard, hear are some: Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy - Completely unexpected on first listen, where all music should be. (ditto SAW2) Squarepusher - Music is rotted one note - Good grief this was a change, when I was expecting a Big Loada style album, have to admit the man is more diverse than well, anyone else. BOC - MHTRTC - I found this very dull on my first listen and didn't know why people liked it so much. Then I tried again, I have been hooked ever since Autechre - Confield - So very strange and almost a challenge to enjoy it.I will conquer this record! Stereolab - Cobra and Phases Group play voltage in the milky night - I expected crap indie poo, but was really suprised and happy, to find it steeped with electronica, and very good. Coil - Time Machines - Hmmm, an hour of drones. Not really what I had expected. Its very 'nice' but in no way unique, it sounds very post Ae IDM with a snifter of glitch mixed in for good measure. It is good, but I don't listen and suddenly thing "Wow, what stunning originality" I have recently come to wonder how many of the artists actually have an idea of the tune etc for a song before they start and how many just wank around with their instruments until they get something coherent. i don't think the originality is a MUST. if so most of the artist wouldn't show their art anymore because nearly everything is the variation of well known only or the combination of two well known. i listened to "the rip-off artist: the kids are alright" yesterday, this album is great, i can highly recommend it, but i wasn't able to enjoy it because 70% of it sounds like ATOM.

Point taken, but I personally thought that Atol Scrap by Arovane was one of his unique-sounding albums - alot of his earlier works sorta just ran together. It was hard for everyone I knew to hear any of his earlier stuff and then pinpoint which album it was off of. And as far as what artists go through to get a tune done, good question. To me, though, it doesn't matter if they had a song in their head for weeks and then mapped it out on their equipment, or they came up with a tune by just farting around with something. Arovane probably does both former and latter. :) I agree, certain artists just reek of that "hey, I came up with this cool tune whilst farting around" sound. Like Muslimgauze. No offense to anyone else in the mailing list, but I think that Muslimgauze sucks. All of his crap runs together from his 120 - 125 something damn albums. You know, I picked this up a while back on the strength of the one fairly accessible track toward the beginning with lots of fantastic soft rhythm, and then didn't touch it again for six months or so. Then, I randomly brought it along to work to listen to on headphones, and thought it was really lovely, in its own abstract, disjointed sort of way. I've found, for some reason, that I only like it on headphones, but that I really like it on headphones. Occasionally. Just my own pointless contribution of my relation to this album. (And yes, I call it an album even though it's only come out on CD as far as I know--- just like photo albums aren't laid onto wax either. Etymologically, as if that sort of thing really matters, the word derives from the latin for "blank tablet", i.e. an album is a receptacle for a collection of info. "Record albums", on the other hand, are almost always vinyl, as are platters if they play music when spun).
