[Who : Selective attack]
(1) From Okinawa, Yasukatsu Oshima is a singer who has
revitalised his islands' traditions and one of Japan's
most important folk artists. His vocals are "highly
idiosyncratic". Toshimaru Nakamura plays only feedback
- sometimes at very quiet volumes, sometimes at
brain-damaging levels. What do they have in common?
Perhaps a sense of cultural resistance and a certain
austerity of taste. Both recently heard and seen on
Otomo Yoshihide's sell-out CMNTour, "Japanorama."
James Orr Complex is one man and an acoustic guitar
whose beautifully dark and intense songs should
compliment the Japanese player's music perfectly.
(2) Goodiepal / Mainpal Inv. is Kristian Vester, at
present working on a new Goodiepal language which will
not premiere until the summer of 2003, this is a rare
live performance. Serious Naan have developed a whole
host of innovative recipe ideas, sound manipulation
techniques and convenient formats to take snacking
into the 21st Century.
(3) Tom Barman is the lead singer of Belgian
"superband" Deus. Benoît Poelvorde is the main actor
in every student's favourite "black comedy" Man
Bites Dog. Foton Records, we know everything about and
so should you, the rest we know nothing about.
(1)(2)(3) Klaus Oldanburg is a member of Diskono, who
met in 1995 at the auditions to find the bass player
for Scottish 'tribute band' to Flipper. None of them
got the job, but they decided to stop playing "Sex
Bomb" endlessly and instead "adopt neo-avant pop
tactics to both plunder the music industry and savage
it's media lap-dogs".
