I agree...that IS pretty weak. Boring music is boring music. It doesn't matter if someone turns it out on a computer, on a hardware sequencer or on a damn washboard with silver spoons. I don't agree. I think endless editing with things like pro tools has led to a lot of mainstream music being dull, lacking in spontaneity and performance value. It's easy to take even a fairly poor performance and make it sound OK by cutting it up and recycling all the best bits. I can also see May's argument from a techno point of view. I've used sofware sequencers for a long time but I find composing n a hardware sequencer much more fun and more stimulating musically, because I'm actively listenng all the time instead of looking at my arrangement on a screen. Of course I still like doing audio editing on a computer etc., but all of my favorite stuff has come from actually twiddling hardware in real time. On a computer sequencer it's so easy to copy and paste chunks about that I often do so as a short-cut, whereas with hardware every such edit involves a bit more effort and I'm more inclined to think about whether it's really appropriate at that point or not. I thought the whole spirit of Techno was apparent in the name: "Techno: Music made with Technology" .. to ignore/shun what is perhaps the single-most important technological advancement seems kind of silly to me. I'm not accusing you of this Anig, its just how the quote makes me feel.

I think it really depends on what it is you are doing or what you are trying to accomplish. I personally work from a music concrete stance (think luc ferrari for those confused), but that doesn't mean everyone should nor would I want them to. And I think most of us (hopefully) can tell the difference between somone who got Acid Rock with his prepackaged computer and hasn't got a brain in his head and someone who may utilize the same tools (or limitations) to produce brilliant music. If you thought for a moment about all the different ways the artists in your cd collections produced music you'd realize Derrick may make a good personal point for himself, but it isn't valid or necessary for everyone.
