has anyone else heard a blatant AE rippoff in one of fizzarum's tracks??? it's a snippet of some noise between tracks on chaistic slide, that was made into some sort of rhythmic fill used twice(2 times) in this track im speaking of.. unfortunately, i have no idea the track name, the album name, or if it's even truly a fizzarum track:) but i heard it dammit, i swear i did.... _lgb __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Im sure most of you are familiar with Frontline Assembly....and the side-projects. Bill and co. rip shit off from damn near everyone....I like to refer to Bill as the "Puff Daddy of 'Industrial' music"...well, now I suppose I'll have to say the "P. Diddy..." Anyways, I know its a tad off subject but...I have heard FLA rip form Aphex Twin, Future Sound Of London, Skinny Puppy, and if i dig out FLA cd's Im sure I could pick out more.... This brings up a question... How do you people personally feel about an artist sampling another artist for use in a song...not for any kind of cover, just stuff like ripping a sound break or a beat and making into a whole new song??? Would this lessen the repect you have for the artist or the song?? I know a similar topic was recently discussed, so please, dont jump on my ass....if you find this post "useless" or just plain stupid...dont waste your time replying. thx. xh --- logrey beam <logreybeam@yahoo.com> wrote:

sampling is great if done CREATIVELY. stealing a hook or looping another's break is weak sauce. Taking a noise, if using it in a different context, and especially if heavily affected, is okay. Ebola np: Skinny Puppy

Hi !! I'm Fabrice, live in France (Paris) and I'm quite new on this list. I agree with your answer, but it makes me asking some questions. You talk in this thread about FLA. I don't really know this band even if a friend told me to listen to them. But one day I've heard Test Dept. and I've been very surprised to find this music very close from Autechre works. So what do you think of Test Dept. ? Is it known influence from Autechre ? Well, I'm fond of electronica and I like Fizzarum, Funkstorung even if they are copying on Autechre. In fact I don't really see a copy in their works. I wouldn't say that with Brothomstates Ep. where each track refer to an Autechre's track. I like this Ep, but I have some doubts about them... What else... I've seen Styrofoam live in Paris last Saturday and it was wonderfull !! :-) Fabrice A. http://www.etherreal.com (half of this name is a sample from hyperreal) -----Message d'origine----- De : SYLK130@aol.com <SYLK130@aol.com> À : themourn@yahoo.com <themourn@yahoo.com>; idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date : mardi 28 août 2001 06:57 Objet : Re: [idm] samplespotting. Test Dep. have been around for a long time, and if I understand this correctly, you are wondering if Test Dept. may have been influenced by AE....I dont think so, I wouldn't really even draw any direct connection. xh --- Fabrice ALLARD <fabrice.allard@etherreal.com> wrote:

I don't really like it. It can of course be very creative and there are a whole bunch of songs/tracks I've heard where this is used very effectively as a creative device, eg Old Blues Loop Over Breakbeat with Sensitive New Lyrics. And I like a lot of tracks where some identifiable sample is used as a stab/accent - like my treasured copy of Utah Saints' 'Something Good'. But a lot of the time it's just tired and says to me that the sampling artist just did a quick jam/rap/pro tools session over somebody else's proven hit. I particularly don't like it in electronic music, because if I hear the sample-based track I might think it was really cool, be interested in how the artist makes those interesting sounds, etc. etc. I'm always hugely disappointed if I later find that they came from another track/a sample CD. OK I am more of a sound designer than a muso, but I'd be totally embarrassed to use someone else's sounds. I guess I'm saying that samples can make a great garnish on a track, but artists should provide their own main course. The alternative is 'McDonalds music' - proven formula, tastes OK, but after a while you just consume it out of habit. Besides the direct sampling, I'm hearing more and more chart music which is just barely-legal ripping off of older tunes...oh well, you can't legislate good taste. Welcome to capitalism.
