i generally avoid posting the overly enthusiastic 'wow!'-type fanboy stuff, but this was such a great show and i need to share...so here's my long-winded & biased recap: jd/cubist - very danceable electro-tinged opening dj set which got quite a few moving. most people rolled in slowly so there was plenty of room for a bit of disjointed body-flailing by many. my wife was pleased by the jega track he dropped - that started the evening off right. anyway, anyone have any other info on jd? if his track selection is an indication of the style of his own musical output, i for one will be looking forward to that release on orange. mira calix - she brought some interesting selections...heard a lot of gescom/ae (surprise) which is always welcome. i thought there were points in the set where she could have moved a track/mood along a bit but that could've just been me being antsy. HOWEVER, what was she spinning for the last 10 (or so) minutes??? i couldn't tell if it was 2 tracks or one long epic number. I must find that, whatever it was - who can help? plaid - !!!! - given that tickets for this show went on sale in early JUNE, there was far too much time to build up expectations, but i was still floored. their take on the live '2 blokes from warp behind 2 g4's' is quite refreshing. and what an incredible video accompaniment - they had what appeared to be a little stalk of 2 or 3 (?) bundled mini cams coming out from up front, trained on them and their desk - footage from which was then occasionally fed back to itself, or subtlety stalled & jerked back in time with the beats. from track to track this was then woven around 16mm stock with bits of clever animation - the visuals really seemed to gel with each track perfectly. as for the set itself (may be a bit off): they played 15 tracks over an hour & a half: 7 off double figure including fell, a surprising track 10 off rpc, their already-classic bukatienda remix (william rusere), and about (?) 6 unidentified/unreleased songs - three of which I hadn't heard before. the highlight for me: new family. added bonus: it dawned on me after the show that there's a denver date on tuesday and that's where i happen to be flying to that morning! needless to say, just bought my ticket. the dust hasn't settled but i'd still say this one ranks up there in my top 5 live shows...which should be another topic, no? i can't recall if that's been covered in the most recent 6-month-rehash-an-idm-thread-cycle...so, let's see...here's mine: my bloody valentine - roxy la '92 meat beat manifesto/orbital/ultramarine - sf '92 mu-ziq/jonah sharpe - some boat party in sf bay - '95 (?) autechre - troubadour la '96 and yes, plaid - la '01!!! ray

how was your recap biased? i missed rd and most of mira calix on account of getting a flat tire on the way to the venue. c'est la vie. well, i went into the show not caring much for plaid, viewing the show as an opportunity to be converted, or to walk away. well. it was fucking fantastic and definitely one of the better laptop shows i've ever seen. i had to buy the album, and i haven't stopped listening to it yet, so i feel vindicated. also i met a lot of people as i was handing out flyers- mine were the red ones with pictures of lips and guns on them... hope you all had as much fun as i did! top 5 live: mouse on mars-LA '01 radiohead-milan '00 sonic youth-LA '98 muziq/autechre- '99/00? when was coachella? kid 606-SF '00 actually not the greatest show i've seen him play, but it was the right after i really, really got into electronic music beyond the whole warp thing and it was a transcendent listening event gregory __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I got your flier! Good job on grabbing our attention, I never read these things, just either stuff them in my pocket or throw them away, but yours was witty and creative somehow (I cant remember what it said, I just remember laughing). Okay, for my non-biased account of the show. 1)yes, RD was really good, but I hate that they stuck him up behind the audience in a little booth where you couldnt even see him. I HATE IT WHEN VENUES DO THAT! You know, audience interaction and all that, tends to be important. I am glad that he is getting exposure though, he deserves it. 2)Mira Calix... she should have been stuck upstairs in that little booth as opposed to RD... no audience interaction, something i would listen to in a dark room with big fluffy couches smoking opium and drooling on myself. Which brought me to my big gripe of the night, fuck man, what is up with female IDM dj's or producers, can you please please send me the names of some really good ones, because everything i hear is boring and there is really not much of it out there. Makes me really really want to do this myself... 3)Oh yes, Plaid. It's all been said... i was gyrating like a monkey on LSD. This was the shit. nother little gripe, there is always something that bugs me about the El Rey Theatre and i just now figured it out... Electronic music events i dont think should be "shows", aka, people come in, arrange themselves in an appropriate fashion to watch the performers, drink their beverages and stare foreward... that's what made me jump ship from the indie rock thing... there should be a better way, that seems to be the OLD way. The better way I think is when the audience is a part of the event, when their energy directly contributes to the experience. Not, I am just a dumb spectator type of feel. Anyway, I'll have my own place and figure out how to deal with that...

I'm thinking that had more to do with logistics than anything else- they (the venue) probably wanted all three acts set up and ready to go before anybody started to avoid switching cables and creating potential technical difficulties during the show. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
