Hi, I joined this list thinking it was the same one I joined a few years ago which sent out reviews of new (and sometimes old) IDMish material released. That was a great list. However, a very short while on this list, it is quite obvious that this is not the same list. So my questions are: 1) Does anyone know if the list I was talking about (also run off Hyperreal I believe) is still in existence? Has it moved? 2) Does anyone know of any other lists where IDM material is reviewed and/or discussed and where topics such as *rumors of whether BOC are pedophiles *constant anouncements for/about parties in cities I don't live in are entirely inappropriate? this brings up something that I have been wondering about myself. Is this an appropriate avenue to announce events that I am working on? personally, I like hearing about events that are going on in my area, but I can't help but feel like seedy promoter when I use a discussion list to push my shows. if everyone were to do the same, this list would quickly become overcrowded with announcements, and it is obvious that some people already think that it is. I have justified this to my self by the fact that nothing that I organize is intended to create a profit - every event that I am involved with is created for the intent of allowing good music to be played and heard in my area. however, this justification is pointless as it just creates clutter for the 99% of the people on this list who don't live in or around Seattle, WA. of corse I don't think that posts about BoC being pedophiles are appropriate, but it is an open forum, so I chose to use my "delete" key rather than make yet another post about how this list has gone to shit. /mauck/ On Tue, Aug 07, 2001 at 02:01:29AM -0400, watson wrote:

Well I have a simple idea for you. Why not settle all of your promotion in periodic posts inviting members of this list that live in your area to join your list to be informed about events you are working on in yours and their area's?....it would be as easy as that...just go Yahoo! groups for example, and set up a group of your own, then if there are any people on this list that live in your area, and if they are interested, they will join your list, and you can post to your hearts content;)....without feeling guilty. a kind suggestion.... xh --- mauck <mauck@bluehouse.org> wrote:

There is nothing wrong with continuing to contribute high-quality and on-topic posts while affixing a couple lines below your signature with a pointer to the information you desire to point people to. In fact, it's a time-tested technique that has been proven by 10 years of mailing list concerns such as yours. A short example: <some message> <your name> Patagonia IDM Events http://groups.blah.com/patagoniaIDM Simple, eh? Of course, it doesn't have the "LOOK AT ME RIGHT NOW" bombast of an entire message constructed to be a flyer of sorts, but it does deal with your concerns for crowding the list and it lets you get your message out. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

[Posted in may 2001 by Lance ... ] [...] Introducing the IDM - MODERATED list... the signal-to-noise ratio has been over- whelming on the idm list for quite some time now so in an effort to develop a much on-topic & civil discussion forum i have just created an idm-moderated list using the YahooGroups list service. the list is MODERATED by me and it will be used exclusively for the discussion of idm, ambient, techno, dub, electronica, downtempo, & experimental music. Off-topic and aimless threads will not be tolerated nor will discussions about mp3s, bootlegging, what is idm, fanboy worship, self promotions, sale lists, music production, hobbies outside music, etc. abuse of these rules could result in expulsion from the idm-m list. i will be tyranical about these rules only to insure quality list content. List membership is by permission-only so i have to authorize all members. I will authorize all new members but this feature also allows me to block repeat offenders from resubbing to the list. This idm-m list was just created last night so it's still in the development stage. You can subscribe now but keep in mind it may go though a few changes in the next few weeks but only with the purpose of making the list better. So welcome all who want to talk about and find out about music and NOTHING BUT music. To subscribe to the idm-m list visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/idm-m btw: i will continue posting my messages to the full idm list so those of you who want a forum with more 'liberal' posting policies can remain on this list. I agree nothing is more boring then deleting this 20 posts everyday. Couldn't we make a special list called something like: "IDM Events List" or something? Dood... every few days there's gotta be at least one person complaining about some aspect of the list that they dont like. I know, I know, why not create a whole new email account or a folder for this list and then you can only read what you want to read and periodically just click "empty folder" and it will all disappear right before your eyes. I feel like there is a whole herd of IDM-loving grandmas who all sit around with nothing to do but complain about whether this message is pertinent or not to IDM. I personally love to travel a lot, and I like hearing about what's going on in other states/countries. I have friends who are all over the place and I forward them the info about good parties/shows going on in their area. I like knowing what's going on in New York and Philly and San Francisco, London, LA, Montreal, whatever. And hey, the whole BOC are pedophiles discussion really amused me and got me me to snicker. Granted it went for a bit too long... but I just didnt read them past a certain point. The way it goes is the way it goes and whatever anyone wants to say or announce or declare or rant about is all good, no one is forcing anyone to read anything. Errr... okay, sorry, i just couldnt resist...i get so annoyed by complaining. So i have to complain about it. :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Besides, I'd much rather see posts saying "hey, see so 'n so here and it's 5 bucks" instead of "come to the new york mailing list to get info on new york shows" or for montreal, minneapolis, san fran, or any of the other billion cities that might possibly have an idm-related performance. this way the events tend to be a lot more on topic, instead of ending up as a spam-board for raves.

It doesn't have to be a mailing list. For instance, there's a whole history of using webpages to store frequently updated information. Appropriately enough, I see that another Daily Artist/Promoter Update has just flown into my inbox. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

one thing to add to this: if people see events are working on other cities, they might be inspired to start them in theirs.. like, hey, in seattle someone put on an idm-fest of sorts and were bold enought o fly in folk from all over -- perhaps that might work for my area? i am willing to bet the folks the complain a lot about list announcements are: 1. the same folk that bitch nothing happens near them 2. people who never leave the house :) but really, i ENJOY what is going on all over. i LIKE knowing greg is doing something in canada or that the schematic kids are doing shit in miami... and i see no harm. keep hosting events. keep promoting them. IT IS A HEALTHY THING FOR THIS SCENE/MUSIC. with respect & love for all of the bitches on this list, chris. On Tue, 7 Aug 2001, Yulia Matusov wrote:

Well, if events were on another list, then anyone who was in a city would subscribe anyway to see local events and would have to read about many more parties in other places. I suggest instead putting the word [event] in the subject line, which would make it easy for people to filter out this stuff, or have their mailer move it to another folder automatically. So a typical subject would look like: [idm] [event] Come to my fabulous birthday party!! Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
