hopefully this isn't too off topic. if this is annoying - email me offlist. My wife hates my music (only types I listen to are electronica & post rock), but we recently found a middle ground - modern electronic lounge. Problem is, that much of it that I've sampled seems to delve too much into cheesy sounds, smooth jazz or easy listening (like some of the thievery corp stuff I listened to...). What are some essential lounge CDs out there? Any suggestions would be good. tg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's not necessarily lounge, but it might what you are looking for check out Nicola Conte - Bossa Per Due [ESL] or Mark De Clive-Lowe on Universal Jazz. The Ubiquity Recordings - New Latinaire series are good. Compost Records, and G Stone has cool material! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? she would probably like the following: Bebel Gilberto 'Tanto Tempo' and from http://www.ninjatune.net back catalogue you could start her on: Cinematic Orchestra "Motion" Funki Porcini "Head Phone Sex" DJ Food "Keleidescope" and delving further back in the catalogue 9 Lazy 9 - either album is very loungy & err lazy and even more kick back from the ntone catalogue Neotropic "La Prochaine Fois" on ntone and you could both kick back and watch the movie. and the albums by Flanger Fink

I'd have to agree with Nethed - you could do a lot worse than Flanger and also Burnt's Con Ritmo - DEEP, easy listening if that's not an oxymoron. All the best, Colin. _____________________________ ... and life is a song sung low and cool to rouse the gentle spirit Jeff Noon

It couldn't be as annoying as half of the other posts, so i'm replying ON list. Besides, I've got an IDM angle here ;) You should most definitely check out Tipsy. Their first album "Trip Tease" is great. Allegedly, the duo (whose names I conveniently forget) had been constructing loopy lounge songs from loops culled from many Esquivel recordings and and other lounge essentials. They couldn't get clearance on the samples (you'll recognize many if you are down with lounge/exotica ala esquivel, denny, baxter, etc) so they brought in a bunch of Bay Area jazzbos to record the parts they'd sampled. The result is an awesome loungy but very modern sounding album with lots of great moods. After that, a 12" was released with a new song and remixes by u-ziq and curd duca. This is FUCKING EXCELLENT. Its called Flying Monkey Fist. And then five years after Trip Tease (in 2001), they released "Uh Oh!". Its not quite as mellow as Trip Tease, but offers a more fractured idm-friendly (not to say that trip tease isn't idm friendly) perspective of lounge stuff. Lots of instruments cut up and played backwards. I love it. Tipsy is rad! By their albums. Also, Curd Duca (mentioned above) is kinda electronic loungey stuff. I reccomend the elevator series (3 volumes out). And then more obviously, Luke Vibert's album with BJ Cole is pretty loungy. In terms of more traditional stuff, I like Martin Denny a lot. I'm at work now so I don't know exactly what it was called, but he has a really awesome moog-lounge album. Oh wait... I think its called Exotic Moog. Thats all that springs to mind at the moment. Have fun. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: Tim Gregory <tgregory@ccmc.org> Date: Friday, July 20, 2001 2:40 pm Subject: [idm] lounge recommendations

Maybe it's just me, but a lot of the Kruder & Dorfmeister albums are loungey. I only have the K & D Sessions, but i like that one quite a bit. Especially for the rainer truby trio remix. there's also some laid back jazzy stuff (does that qualify as lounge?) on Ninjatune, if you look into their back catalog. cheers, /derek At 03:56 PM 7/20/2001 -0400, you wrote:

I'll definitely second (or third) the Tipsy and Senor Coconut recommendations offered up by others. Also, though, you should check out Stock, Hausen, and Walkman for a nice, very interesting tangental glance at the lounge genre falling well within the IDM range, with nice, lush rhythms. I'd also be really surprised if your wife didn't dig on mid-period Mouse on Mars, especially Iaora Tahiti and the Twift single (excepting that excellent little piece of video game logic by fx randomiz, but with special attention to the High Violets remix). And I know you said *modern* lounge, but there's also a lovely, upbeat comp on Emperor Norton called "Cinemaphonic: Electro Soul" featuring a number of Perrey/Kingsley tunes along with a number of nice classic bits by artists working in the same aesthetic range. You won't avoid cheesiness here (nor will you in anything that yer gonna call lounge, for the most part), but this stuff is so damn friendly it's difficult to resist liking it, and the composition on many of the tunes avoids a lot of the easy cops and camp prevalent in most latter-day lounge artists (especially those generally on Emperor Norton), linking it more with things by Esquivel, Mancini, or Martin Denny recordings, each one a whole helluva revolution for their time-- in production technologies and otherwise. Oh, and Broadcast (maybe too obvious of a choice, here) also maintains a good deal of the lounge feel without sacrificing any depth to the music. And I can't help but hear some hefty lounge/easy-listening influence in Schlammpeitziger's Augenwischwaldmoppgefloete, but then.... that's probably just me. Yeah... I'm guessing it's just me. The Stock, Hausen, and Walkman recommendation took me completely by surprise. The material I have from them is very frantic, cut-up, slice and dice, hyper-tweaked cornball-goofy and noise blasting craziness. Now I don't own the whole S, H & W catalog, but my first thought upon hearing them as a lounge recommendation was "be careful." They remind me more of Runzelstirn & Gurgelstøck meet Negativland, than they do Tipsy. I would definitely second the Senor Coconut recommendation as well as other Atom Heart creations. Atom's "Eric Satin:Light Music" comes to mind... joel NP: Midisport: 14 footballers in milkchocolate --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I forgot about Stock, Hausen and Walkman. I have some of the albums you're talking about and, no, they aren't really loungy at all, but the Organ Transplants albums (volume 1 & 2) definitely fit the bill. Volume 1 is better so check that out first. It was in heavy heavy rotation for the first 6 months I owned. I love it. Very loungy, but still fucked all to hell and the SH&W boys have their tongue firmly planted in their cheek. Oh... and its not IDM, but I get to see Man or Astroman in a couple hours so nyaaa! Isn't Plone a bit on the exotic wallpapery side of the border....perhaps you could pass them off to your girlfriend as lounge.... Tipsy is great (again)......and I'd have to recommend anything by Tom Recchion....from LAFMS fame....he does really melodic 'loungy' cut-up tracks with that grainy vinyl quality we all love in the digital age... He had one record out on Birdman....."Chaotica" which describes the music nicely....(but don't be scared).....<you can hear samples at skamazon or cd cow...> Good luck...that happy medium is a good place to be sometimes.... Yes, it was indeed the Organ Transplants albums I was recommending as falling into the lounge spectrum for Stock, Hausen and Walkman-- I didn't realize their other material was in a different vein, although from the description offered I might like it as well. The Organ Transplants albums, for their part, are great, great, chopped and updated space-age beatbox love... I can definitely vouch for that. On another note, I accidentally switched up the Cinemaphonic compilation with "Best of Moog" in my previous post-- Cinemaphonic doesn't have Perrey/Kingsley and co., but rather Walter Murphy and a whole mess of nice beat-era pre-acid movie soundtrack tunes. Recommended, but for different reasons. Another band I very absolutely inexplicably forgot to mention is Ursula 1000. I believe they're on Thievery Corporation's label (along with Nicola Conte), but as far as I'm concerned they're miles ahead of that crew. Their DJ album "All Systems a Go-Go" is very well put together, nice progression, nice tunes, and I suppose also nice as a sampler if you choose to view it that way. Their "Beat Box Cha-Cha" album is highly recommended as well. Best, M. Aaron D Meyers <adm226@nyu.edu> wrote:
