I'm just recently getting into Susumu Yokota's music.
Thankfully five albums of his stuff - the stuff people
should get - are available at emusic.com.
Anyways, on the strength of those albums, I bought his
recent "Grinning Cat" on Leaf/Skintone, and I have to
say it's a real grower. I'm not really into ambient
music; I know next to nothing about it as a genre.
However, this strikes me as some of the best, most
engaging ambient I've heard. More creative than your
average "static with synthy bits" (though Aphex did
nicely with that formula on SAW2), more diverse and
interesting than even the least formulaic standard IDM
release...
Disturbing at times, gorgeous at others, all I can say
is try it.
It certainly hasn't disappointed me as a followup to
"Magic Thread"/"Sakura" like 310's recent "After All"
disappointed me as a followup to "The Dirty Rope"...
-Adam (who generally runs the gamut of maturity
levels, all the way from Boy to Man to the occasional
Codger, and still appreciated the IDM XXX post.)
