Uhm, Tool samples Art Bell... errrrrr honest to god. King Crimson!! I thought that R.Fripp guy was dead, this is weird shite... but is it IDM? My point, well... ok there was no point save to say that after hearing two singles I really want to get the new Techno Animal album when or if it ever comes out. Hip hop/spooky soundscapes by two industrial metalists Kevin(god)Martin & JK(flesh)Broaderick. OH and some bloke named Dalek is in on it too, some MC type. Ugh, forever into the crossover wank.

Why amazed...they were certainly the 'intelligent music' of their era. I was spinning minimal techno Friday night at my DJ bar gig and mixing in a bootleg mp3 of Fripp doing a live soundscape gig somewhere...beautiful stuff. As I stood watching Tortoise last night doing a thoroughly enjoyable set at DEMF, it was quite impossible NOT to invoke King Crimson (in their 70s jazz/prog phase) when making comparisons. Some of those time signatures in the live shows seem quite "brufordian". jeff At 10:12 AM 5/27/2001 +0800, Digital Cutup Lounge wrote:

"Amazed" only because the year is 2001. I too remember Larks Tongues in Aspic, Court of the Crimson King, etc. etc. Likewise Fripp's League of Gentlemen, his work with Eno... but all that was about errrrm, 25 years ago and I had no idea that they were still kicking.

unlike the best of Fripp's side projects, King Crimson lacked style. it was a consistently awkward attempt to sell prog-rock ideas to a slightly-left-of-center audience. with bad singing. i think Eno exploited Fripp's talent incredibly well, encouraging all the good and leaving behind the smelly. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think Slint was pretty open about the influence of _Red_-era Crimson on their sound (or maybe it was Rodan... eep). It might be a stretch to say that the entire post-rock "movement" owes something to the group, but on the other hand, you'd do a disservice to ignore it.

Yeah, you might be surprised about how much they rocked, especially considering the average beard length/astigmatism of their followers. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Imo, Crimson (well mostly just Fripp) were a band that seemed to have potential to do interesting things, but for me they never quite lived up to the expectations. Their albums (except maybe for Discipline, depending on your taste I guess) tend(ed) to be pretty inconsistent. Despite their more avant leanings they still tended to reek of prog pretension and had a lot of that sort of Stonehenge quality about 'em in the 70's (must be all those tritones and diminished scales). But, yeah they did have moments when they really rocked (2nd half of "Starless" off Red is a favorite of mine). A friend burned me a copy of this 2 CD set of live stuff from the 70's called "King Crimson: The Nightwatch - Live at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw November 23rd 1973" and they really burn on that one. They do a scorching version of "21st Century Schiziod Man" and Fripp is just really strident in general.
