I'm not native, but I have visited their quite a bit in the past three years. Check out the Haight Street area, as well as Berkley for record shops. As for clubs- the best I found was a thing called Jazid Up- I think Thursdays was the time to be there, though this could have changed. Oh, also check out the action at Niki's BBQ! These are both acid jazz/house- ish clubs, BTW... Regards- -Thad

You should definitely check out Mod Lang and Rasputine's both in Berkeley. Mohsen

Didn't Rasputin's close (or at least their used store)? Another shop in Berkeley to explore would be Primal records. Mod Lang is excellent, if you're looking for generally available stuff cheap. Lots of FAX at domestic prices, lots of Intellinet vinyl, but unfortunately very little in the way of obscure goodies. Matt

The used stuff is in the same store (on Telegraph). There is some kind of warehouse junky looking outlet next to Blondie's pizza that is closed (I think), but the main store is on the corner. If you go to this Rasputin's be sure to look upstairs. Also, just a little further down Telegraph is Amoeba, another large store with new&used stuff. Rasputin's in Hayward (on Hesperian) also is good (not quite as large but I think they have a larger used techno selection) I've never been to Rasputin's in Pleasant Hill. Finally, down in Fremont (near Newark, near Ardenwood in this shopping center with Raley's) is Compact Disc Warehouse. Not really large, but you can listen to the used CDs before you buy! They have an OK selection, if you go to Hayward Rasputin's this store isn't too far away.

Just thought I'd include those for anyone who didn't see the original message. =) If one were to go to all these stores, it would be a good amount of driving, but hey, it's your trip I guess. =) BTW, how about some stores actually in SF? I don't go there often but some places I've been wanting to check out are Streetlight and Tweekin. Any comments? That's all! (BTW, sorry to everyone not in or visiting CA) - Bobby Tribble

It's nextdoor to a blondie's too :-) it has a great selection of Live 105 style 'modern rock' (including stuff like Portishead or the Inspirals) and a mediocre selection of iDm (capitalization intended). They pay the best for used CD's of any place I've ever been; consider them if you're like me and like to recycle old discs.

Tweekin is great (it's on Haight between Fillmore and Steiner). Star Alley is also cool (it's in an alley called Linden, roughly at Gough between Hayes and Fell). BPM is also a must-visit, it's on Polk. They probably have the most cutting-edge bang for the buck. Of all of them, Star Alley is probably the one I go to most. Check the sfraves calendar for cool weekly events. As far as clubs go, IMHO Noc Noc is the coolest bar I've ever been to. It's a few doors down from Tweekin records. For radio stations, the ultra-commercial Live 105 (fm 105.3) plays good music occasionally (probably half the bands mentioned on this list have been played there at one time or another). The local colleges have good radio shows but I'm not too familiar with them (I only listen to radio during the commute so I get to choose between Alex Bennett and Howard Stern for most of my radio enjoyment :-) -H-
