So I dug out a few of my "old" Ozric Tentacles tapes recently after a long hiatus of not listening to them at all and have realized what was so appealing about their music in the first place. They are one of those bands that incorporate many different styles of music to create their own sound.Granted, IMO, they are more on the progressive rock side of things but nonetheless there is something otherworldy in their compositions. I began to ponder this whole "granola/glowstick" connection between the electronic music scene and the jam band scene and how closely they are related.I am thinking in terms of the live experience and how, in alot of ways,it can be a modern spiritual gathering. But, when it comes to the aspect of a DJ vs. a whole band the one thing the DJ is missing, aside from scratching and various pitch bends and tempo changes, is the improvisational aspect, which leads me right into this IDM concept. IDM to me seems much more closely related to Hip Hop than anything else. There are hints of jazz, classical, and ambient but the majority of what I've heard seems heavily Hip Hop influenced, which I love.I prefer to call it CDM ( Conversational Dance Music)because that's really what I end up doing if I'm listening to it with friends, dancing around and saving the world at the same time. I guess I'm just looking for music that has the improvisational aspect of Jazz, along with the chopped up programmed beats of IDM with a dash of rock and reggae and a side of ambience for good measure. Tortoise comes to mind more so than anything else but there has to be more out there, maybe I'm just not looking deep enough. Anyone have any alternate takes on this? ^^tshake^^ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well people may differ with you on that comment but since were on the subjects of relations between styles I often think salsa sounds like trance. anyway back on subject... i'm never short of jaw dropped when it comes to the fusion of jazz and electronica that squarepusher produces. that boy has a loads of good material to spend time on - pull out Hard Normal Daddy's "Papalon" track for instance. Tell me that sounds like Hip-Hop ;) pink --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There is but one mighty Squarepusher. Armed with his 303, Samplers, and live Electric Bass... he swoops from the sky to... well, maybe he doesn't do a lot of swooping, but he makes kick-ass music. Hey I think squarepusher doesn't "PLAY" keyboards realtime, it sounds like it could be step recorded to me. Although I cant verify this cause I've never seen him perform live. I know he plays a mean bass which is a kind of anomoly for electronic stuff. Has anyone seen his live show or how he records his keyboard tracks? --- Garth Brantley <garth@fullduplex.com> wrote:
