What is the best Pan[a]Sonic album for a beginner and why? Same question for Vladislav delay. it sort of depends on your tastes. Panasonic gets progressively less accessible in my opinion, but also progressively better. the "vakio" album is more conventional in that it has a lot of straight forward 4-4 beats and things, a little more techno-influenced (influenced, not sounding necessarily) than the newer stuff. "Kulma" is sort of a cross between noisy beats and more sparse sounds. "A" is really really atmospheric and probably the most out there of them all, whereas "Aaltopiiri" (the new one) is really great, because it combines a little of all of them, from really ambient, sterile sounds to crazy noisy beat-oriented tracks. Also, if you can locate it, the "Osasto" EP, which I believe is out of print, is really really nice, very heavy, pounding abrasive percussion for most of it. They never really use melody much at all. "Aaltopiiri" has some interesting musical timbre that almost begins to have a melodic quality but never quite gets there entirely. Judging by your "np - Imminent Starvation," you like some of the current industrial stuff and you would probably really like the noisier stuff by Panasonic (Osasto, Aaltopiiri) Their solo stuff (Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vainesen) is more sparse and really abstract, not as ultimately rewarding in my opinion but still interesting in an "outer limits" sort of context. Vladislav Delay... "Multila," easily. The best. Very dense atmospherics that gradually evolve into percussive tracks.... it's really beautiful. His other stuff (with the exception of Luomo in my opinion) won't disappoint but "Multila" is the best of them all, on the Chain Reaction label.

I think I'd take any of Vainio's output on Sahko over any Panasonic record, anytime. The first two 0 singles rate with Basic Channel/Brinkmann/Hawtin for sheer minimal metronomic bliss, and that's not even considering the CDs. Has he discontinued this alias/modus operandi or what? -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'll hold off on the Vainio solo vs. Panasonic comparisons, but yes - the Rotgen and Kvantti 12"ches are great. Luckily they were reissued on CD, (w/exclusives) so all can take part. I think the originals were <1000 pressing each? I seriously doubt that he has given up his solo work.. he's been pretty active recently, although his solo stuff has been more ambient than his minimal beat-fests under 0 etc... who knows if this is a temporary vice or if he's really off the minimal techno bandwagon. I'm hoping he's just been kept busy touring as Pan_sonic. Haven't heard enough to Ilpo Vainesen's solo stuff to comment - PJ hasn't sent my order out yet :) Confession: it's a tie between Panasonic's "osasto EP" and Kentolevi (Vainio)'s "Keimola EP" for best driving music ever pressed on a 12". (if you want to drive hazardously) He's not as prolific as Brinkmann - but that's fine by me. I don't have the budget to keep up with Mr. Brinkmann anyhow. Thanks for your thourough recomendations... Aaltopiiri sounds pretty good to me because of its variety. I usually like a melody of some sort to be included though, so it may be challenging. Most good stuff is. Ebola np: Meat Beat
