I’ve got a label that puts out CDs and frankly I get the same question from people about CDs! But the answer is simply–if there is enough demand to facilitate production of any kind of physical release, why not? Dave

A quick search on Amazon just answered what would have been part two of my question. Had no idea that there were still so many cassette players on the market. I guess tape hiss adds to the warmth. On Fri, Dec 18, 2015 at 12:36 PM, Dave at EAR/Rational Music < dave@ear-rational.com> wrote:

i spose but cassettes i dislike because they wear just like records but then also have a smaller dynamic range/equivalent sampling rate i think its something like 16khz or less? also the whole fast forwarding/rewinding thing heh and i sold my last tape deck years ago i have thought about getting one just cuz they are fairly cheap and cassettes are coming back but i feel like as soon as i drop the money cassettes will fall out of fashion lol Clint Anderson Systems Engineer "Freedom -- paint me a picture!" -- Burton Cummings On Fri, Dec 18, 2015 at 11:36 AM, Dave at EAR/Rational Music < dave@ear-rational.com> wrote:

that's the businessman answer. I think the real answer is that cassettes tap into a deep nostalgia for people of a certain age and it's a bit of an ironic snub to hi-fi audiophile/vinyl culture, celebrating the limitations of the format.  this is not a apologist's defense of the trend (I have not purchased a real tape since maybe the Wu-Tang Forever double-pack in '97), just a casual observation. Also there's been a good amount of interfacing recently between the noise underground (which has always favored tapes) and the world of proper dance/techno/idm/etc. I've noticed alot of material being released both digitally and on cassette. I imagine there's a good amount of listeners who are into collecting some sort of physical media but do most of their listening digitally. CDs for most have no value as an aesthetic object sitting on the shelf, and vinyl is too much of a pain in the ass to press. Therefore tapes are ideal for small pressings and legitimize what would otherwise be a digital-only release, which carries (sadly) stigma, at least to some. Tapes are fun to dig through and usually get looked over. Found a Terrance McKenna and Spacetime Continuum collab in my local record store with full on like 8 panel artwork. I understand since the big lawsuit by Eminem and management about digital download royalties that many contracts have been updated and no longer contain references to tape or vinyl so artists can sell there own without giving money (or much money) to the label. Steve
