I always thought that was the standard agreement with mp3.com
...they own whatever you give them indefinately.
And yeah, mymp3.com violated "existing" copyright law, but IMU
the idea behind the site was to allow anyone to to sign up for an account
and post their personal mp3's (legally dl'd or whatever) to access away from
their main computer, i.e at work, at a friend's house, etc. as one would
expect to be protected under the Fair Use Act in the Constitution.
Nevertheless, the MPAA had the same kneejerk reaction to mymp3 as they had
to other media such as VCR's, tape decks, DAT, CD burners...
What makes me laugh is that the MPAA created the mpeg standard without the
foresight to see what a high-quality, low file-size media encoding protocol
would mean to distribution and subsequently are unable to reap the
(financial) rewards.
