We discussed this a while back on 313, but I would wholeheartedly
suggest that you check out Oliver Ho's older material on Blueprint (James
Ruskin's label), Surface (Richard Polson & Nick Dunton's label) and Meta
(Oliver Ho's own label). The best bet out of the three is probably his own
Meta releases (ten 12" releases, one 2x12" and one 2xLP release this far),
my favourites are the 2x12" ``Prima Materia'' (META6) and the
12"s ``Metaphysical'' (META8), ``Nightlife'' (META9) and ``Mutate &
Survive'' (a collaboration with James Ruskin, META10). Ho's first album
release on Meta, ``Listen To The Voice Inside'' (METALP/CD1) is a
brilliant hybrid of tribal tech-house and techno. The Surface and
Blueprint releases range between hard and sort of weird-ish tribal techno,
somewhat in the vein of SLS.
If you liked Sessions' last few releases on Cosmic ID and Phont Music,
I'd suggest you check out his remixes of Ben Sims' tracks on Hardgroove,
``Cycle Mixes'' (HARDGROOVE003) and his own EP (''A Bastard's Work Is
Never Done'' if my memory serves) on Dave Angel's Rotation label. Other
Hardgroove releases by Sims could be worth checking out, too.
Also, Oliver Ho's newer label, Light & Dark is very well worth checking
out with two releases out this far, ``Light & Dark Vol. I'' and ``Vol. II
(remixed by Mick Harris''. The first and only release by Ho featuring
Damon Wild on Sequential (sublabel of Urban Substance if I recall) is so
and so, not that tribal nor that good. Ho's outing as Life on Cosmic ID
(``Now EP'', COSID002) is one of the best examples of his tribal elements.
While you're at it, see about Max Duley on his own Arc and
Arc(ane) labels, very deep and sometimes quite tribal techno. Ruskin
should not be missed either, with voluminous releases on his own Blueprint
and more recent Coda labels, as well as Polson/Dunton's output on their
own Surface label and visitations on Ruskin's Coda as the 65D Mavericks.
Claude Young's Deta label (with four releases this far by Young
and Querida, one of his pseydonyms I believe) is also not to miss.
Anthony Child's (Surgeon) labels Dynamic Tension and Counterbalance could
also be a good bet, though the releases on them are not so tribal as for
example Ho's on Meta, but very much worth checking out because of
their unusual rhythm arrangements. Pushing the idea of tribal a bit
further, there might be something worthwhile on Ben Sims' Theory label,
Paul Mac's C-Sides and Stimulus labels, Mark Broom's Pure Plastic (most
notably Mark Broom & Dave Hill's projects as Rue East)...
Probably the closest to what you want are Oliver Ho and James Ruskin,
and you're in luck - Ho's Meta just had a complete repress so all the
releases from META1 to META11 and METALP1 should be still available on
vinyl (try Hedonizm in the UK). Blueprint and Surface releases (especially
the early ones) might be more hard to come by.
These are just off the top of my head - I can give you more accurate
information on each label and release if you need it.
Cheers,
