My vote would go to the track on SAW II. Disc 2 track 11 (I think). It's like 11 min long and it has that creepy-ass voice laughing in the background. And the melody is sick itself. Reminds me of the scene from The Wiz with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson where they're in some subway tunnel and some guy has this accordian dude that comes to life and the music that plays used to scare the crap out of me when I was young. I would have to say Last Rites by Skinny Puppy is a good dark album to play. To me, the last track 'Download' is an awesome one. I would probably switch between that, the swans, phthalocyanine, and halber mensch by einsturzende neubauten all night. If you haven't listened to 'Download' (the song) in a while, or have never heard it, go listen to it now! Had it been the last track that Skinny Puppy ever did, I think it would've been perfect, or at least the perfect transformation from analogue puppy to the digital sounds of 'the eyes of stanley pain' by download. If you listen to the whole last rites and then put on eyes of stanley pain right afterwards, you'll see what I'm talking about. Let's just pretend 'the process' never happened... -Matt- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have been going through a bit of a Skinny Puppy revival lately. Last Rights is an absolutely amazing album. Puppy made such astonishingly beautiful music. My personal favourite though is Harsh Stone White from ViviSect VI. I have kind of avoided Download though since I feel I could not help but compare them to SP, but now I know more I will check them out. (Halber Mensch is truly awesome too! So nice that people around here are into this stuff) What I want to know is, what is that new cEvin Key "Music For Cats" album like? Anybody know? And who knows what David Ogilvie is up to these days? I thought music for cats was kind of old (a few years perhaps). I honestly didn't like it, thought it was too noodly and too random. by the same token, DOwnload III is pretty much an IDM classic for me if you don't mind some industrial overtones in your music. Harsh in parts, moving in others - in that original SP pads over rhythmic mayhem way. -Gil (being absolutely non-descriptive cuz I don't have the music w.me at work to listen to) On Wed, 1 Nov 2000, Ross Balmer wrote:

Yeah, you should, although their style varies quite a bit betweens releases. The first two albums, "Furnace" and "Eyes of Stanley Pain" (and accompanying EPs, "Microscopic" and "Sidewinder") are somewhat "post-industrial" - lots of improvised weirdness and experimental bits. A good extension of where SP might've headed if they hadn't imploded. "III" is more on the techno side of things, with a bit of Chain Reaction influence. Not entirely originally, but still pretty good. And the new album, "Effector" - well, I've only had it for a few days, but I'm pretty unimpressed. There doesn't seem to be much innovation or originality, and there are too many jumps in style from track to track.

Well, it's not that new. Almost two years old, I think. Musically, it's OK, although a little unfocussed (which makes sense as it's mainly a collection of outtakes and studio farting around). Yeah, Skinny Puppy is finding itself in my CD player a lot more these days... Harsh stone white is actually one of cevin key's favorite puppy tracks (I've been told). My friend was over at Bryan Adams' studio about a week ago (wow! holy smokes!). He saw ogilvie there and he was re-mixing Nine Inch Nails (I don't know WHAT he was remixing, other than it was NIN). In my opinion, Music For Cats is an overall terrible album. It is not dark, really misguided, and too dubby/techno for me. I haven't heard it for a while (since a couple months after it came out), so my description of it could sound a bit hazy. I just remember listening to it and saying, "a man who was part of some of the best music made in the last 20 years made this? What happened?". It is really weak. I haven't heard the new Download, but I hear it's pretty crap, as well as 'III' only has a few good tracks. But, check out 'Eyes of Stanley Pain'. What do people think of 'ENDE NEU' or 'SILENCE IS SEXY' by Einsturzende Neubauten? I heard nothing but terrible things about Ende Neu, but after buying it have listened to it dozens of times. A really good album! Could anyone out there that doesn't like it give a summary as to why? Its been out for a few years. cEvin's coming out with a newer solo album this year, i believe.
quoted 1 line I honestly didn't like it, thought it was too noodly and too random.> I honestly didn't like it, thought it was too noodly and too random.
It *is* too random, but i think that has to do with the fact that it was mostly a compilation of tracks cEvin worked on over a period of years that until that point had never been compiled. Something like that isn't very likely to sound fluid. I also think that some of those tracks cannot be divided from the circumstances under which they were written. I recall cEvin once saying in an interview that the track "Bird" on Music For Cats was written about an incident that occured to him (watching a bird die) that for some reason tapped him into the then-recent death of Dwayne Goettel and he immediately walked into the studio and wrote that song. I don't know that i personally could appreciate the impact of that particular song without knowing that information.

Maybe i'm crazy but i hear a definate Chain Reaction influence of Plateau and Download III. --sharon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

that's why I think it's Keys best release to date. I love that album. diverse yet it all strangely works together. it's got all his past present and future flavours in it. it's all pieced together odds and ends.

boring, most stayed album that camp has ever done. every track was totally expected, no new twists and turns, for me it was more what I was expecting from the process. still it's a great album.best download albums for me are 'charlies family', 'III', but I like them all.

I didn't like "III" very much when I got it... and haven't listened to it a lot since that time. I'll give it another listen soon: I'm curious to find out if my opinion will change... "Eyes of Stanley Pain" is a mixed bag for me. Some parts are inspired, others are tedious. As for "Charlie's Family", it's indeed an excellent album. There's even a sample of Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta" (a personal favorite) in there... How can you not like an album like that... ;) g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
