I said "*really* taken off," and I stand behind that statement.
"License to Ill" was the first rap record to reach number one and
"Doggystyle" was the first to open at number one. I would pretty much
say that the Beastie Boys and Snoop both have the "rockstar" thing down
pretty well, so I think my "rockstar" theory is pretty true.
Much like IDM has had myriad underground labels making great music and a
very nice, tightknit scene, it still hasn't really "broken." The *only*
IDM artist of whom most people have heard is Aphex Twin. It takes somebody
with a pretty large interest in electronic music before they even begin
to recognize relatively big names like Autechre or Squarepusher.
