this is the most ridiculous thing I'v ever heard. Puffy? Snoop? jeez. say what you want about them and their music but rap/hip hop had taken off long before those two ever got in the picture. just think about it a little. PE, Run DMC, Beastie Boys...erik b./Rakim...maybe where you live nothing was happening but down in miami break dancing and fat laces were all the rage when I was in Jr. High (now called middle school...early-mid 80's) meanig hip hop was all the rage and it pretty much stayed that way from what I remember. opening doors for the above mentioned artists. I said "*really* taken off," and I stand behind that statement. "License to Ill" was the first rap record to reach number one and "Doggystyle" was the first to open at number one. I would pretty much say that the Beastie Boys and Snoop both have the "rockstar" thing down pretty well, so I think my "rockstar" theory is pretty true. Much like IDM has had myriad underground labels making great music and a very nice, tightknit scene, it still hasn't really "broken." The *only* IDM artist of whom most people have heard is Aphex Twin.
