Not to defend someone for pulling what in most contexts would be a complete
twat maneuver (and really, few things piss me off more than absolute refusal
to acknowledge existence... in a good number of African countries, this is
the official highest insult you can pay--even in the simple instance of
walking by without saying hello--because you're treating someone as if
they're on the same level as an animal or a stone... I've quietly ranted at,
and ultimately (inentionally, finally, visibly) offended a prominent German
professor for doing exactly this when I asked her for the time of day at a
library) but....
This actually falls pretty well in line with Popp's philosophy on the denial
and/or demythologizing of authorship, i.e. it may be that Popp's
over-intellectualized motive behind being a half-existent droid is to reduce
the appearance of authorial presence. Now, why he would go and play live if
that's his goal is anybody's guess.... I can't believe that revenues from
his handful of stateside fans would even pay for travel costs. Quite
possibly he's just reinforcing an overwrought aesthetic of detachment at
this point.
I can't verify whether audience disregard is standard routine for him-- I
didn't see anyone try to chat him up when he opened up for Jim O'Rourke,
although he certainly didn't shout out to the crowd at any point :)-- but at
any rate, I'll still be at his live show at the next opportunity, if only
because I think his schtick works well when the sound is keyed up right....
There are a number of reasons I refuse to try to talk to any given artist on
the basis of a show they've done; not wanting to end up hating a personality
that is only peripherally related to the music they're creating is one of
them. Or did anyone forget that AFX is an overweening, pre-pubescent ass?
I do get occasional urges to chat up Chan Marshall, though... even if the
last time I talked to her she thought I was making fun of her. Sweet kid,
that one.
Cheers,
M.
