That's all fine and good for the mp3 kiddies, but I want to do field recordings on a Minidisc recorder and dump them digitally back to my PC for use in my music. It doesn't look like any of these do that, or at least they don't say so explicitly. A unit that does give the digital i/o I need is the HHB: http://www.hhb.co.uk/FMPro?-db=HHB_Catalogue_Online.fp5&-lay=Web&-Format=hhb productsint.htm&-Token=USA&Product_Code=MDP500&-FIND but unfortunately it is pretty expensive. rw ----- Original Message ----- From: "n5MD" <n5md@wenet.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, September 18, 2000 12:16 PM Subject: [idm] Mp3 to MD...

With a SoundBlaster Live Platinum, MP3 -> MD (and vice versa) transfers is a piece of piece. The LiveDrive II has optical in/out sockets. At least, the European version does. I read something about the earlier (possibly current) US editions don't. Anyway, simply connect your MD player up to your SB Live optically and away you go. That's how I do it anyway. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

all Sound Blaster Live! *RETAIL* cards have optical in/out. i think the only difference with the platinum is that it has the front inputs... so if you have one, make use of it... no need for the USB to optical cable. Edwin Wong [suction@home.com]

afaik anything that bears the Live! insignia is the exact same card, be it value, mp3, or platinum. the only difference that the platinum has is more software (ooh, sblive software :b) and a breakout box (why anyone would want to control multiple ins/outs with an sblive is beyond me, though). the hoontech soundtrack audio dsp24 is an amazing card for the price of an sblive platinum. 2 digital in/out, 2 analog in/out, an optical in/out, and asio drivers for very low latency in software synths. sorry, i'm just very *anti* sblive platinum. i have an sblive value (just the card), and it does the same as all the other versions.... while it's a great card for the price, there are significantly better cards after you get past the 150$ mark. cheers, /derek ----------- "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i know its the same card... but the Live! value cards don't have the optical inputs on them. useless to most people i guess... but good for those with MD player/recorders. Edwin Wong [suction@home.com]

sorry; my bad :) yes, you are correct. the *value* cards do not have the optical inputs on them. thus making my sblive just a vanilla sblive. i do want to point out, though, that creative has discontinued the sblive! value, and they are only available for purchase second hand, so all *new* sblives do have the optical in/out. they're a nice choice if you don't want to spend much money on a pretty decent soundcard. i still don't like the platinum, though :) cheers, /derek ----------- "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So it has 3 digital in/out? optical is digital...so the other two are coax?

So does sblive have an optical in/out? if not you won't be able to use it with any portable MD players...they all have optical in _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
