Does anyone have recommendations? I'm looking at this Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox right now...6GB of storage for $475...and it's creative labs, so you can't go wrong... but I'm still attracted to the lure of playing CDs and mp3s in the same player, so I dunno... any advice for an mp3 junkie? ---brian --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, MD. i just got one a few weeks ago -- thanks to a few friends who put it ino my mind that i needed one... MD is nice for recording anything [Vinyl, CD, Mp3s... whatever] -- especially if you just wanna throw on one track at a time... i don't have a portable MD recorder, so i never looked at prices for them... but i'm sure you can probably dig one up for less than 475. later Edwin Wong [suction@home.com]

Yes! MD! Sony's got a couple models now that come with a usb to digital I/O on it so you can rip those mp3s on some nice digital removable media...that you can use over and over. Plus your not cluttering up your hardrive...I guess i'm alittle biased though... -mike n5MD ----------------------- 4096 Piedmont Ave #551 Oakland CA 94611-5221 ----------------------- www.n5md.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

guitar center has been offering a deal on a portable sony MD recorder/player bundled with a stereo microphone for $199 ... naturally when i went to pick mine up they were out, and of course they had the two items sold separately for $179(player) and $89(microphone)... talk about bait and switch. my buddy got one though and it is very nice, the MD recorder also has an optical input so if you have a sony CD player with optical output, you can do direct digital transfers. they also have a slightly more fancy MD Walkman for about $250 MSRP with a USB interface so you can dump to/from your 'puter. anyway i'm waiting for the Ruitard Center to get more of the $199 bundle in but I will be purchasing one. the sound quality is very good despite the lossy data compression. sounds much better than MP3 for sure. later josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Fri, 15 Sep 2000 suction@home.com wrote:

i saw a blurb about it somewhere. $40US i think? if your soundcard actually has Digital in/ouputs, so it's kind of pointless. i like it for the 'RW' factor. i can play the crap out a track til i'm sick of it, then delete it later on. and when recording, i don't necessarily have to have "a full album" ready [CDR]. another thing, the keyboard input. *very* useful. without it, i don't think i'd like it as much. recording / editing is much easier than the tiny buttons and twiddly knob on the unit itself. (: titling tracks / discs is a lot faster too. bye Edwin Wong [suction@home.com]

MD is the way to go if you want to you it for other applications. But for just playing MP3s - check out one of new discmans that play the actual MP3 file on a regular data cd. No more converting them to wave and them only fitting 13 on a cd - now you can fit hundreds (hours or music) on one CD and listen to them wherever. I forgot the link - they came out awhile ago...but search on zdnet.com - the article and link to the company was on there. I have the genica mp3 cd player, and it's awesome.... I bought it off the net, and it came in 4 days. It's first gen, so it has a few bugs, but i have had absolutely no problems with it...it plays back fine, the antishock is amazing, and it's very stable...imho it seems that the people who say it's a piece of shit don't spend anytime with it to understand how it works...it's great to take it in the car and plug it in thru the cig adapter and have 10+ hours of tunes on 1 cd... cable modem+napster+genica = unlimited portable tunes... dave toronto --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

as an aside, most things that are stated as "pieces of shit" by people are simply huge hear-say situations, like the one outlined above. not to throw the original poster's credibility in question (since that's not the point), but a lot of things are situated like that. "athlon's suck for audio" "non-macs suck for audio" "mini-disks all suck ass" "cd's suck" most are just conjecture or unprovable hear-say. of course, there are always situations where things truly are pieces of shit, but they usually have some sort of backing argument to flesh it out. cheers, /derek ----------- "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Of course, which is what I said. But after reading this review I'm skeptical. I hate cheap industrial design. http://electronics.cnet.com/cgi/crunch/pdetail2.asp?ptable=MP3_Players&pid=1 000063&tag=st.cn.sr.ce.1 The reviewer sounds like a bit anal retentive, though. - Cf --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
