whew! i thought i was the only one. i actually spent the better part of a day playing with it. i did manage to get some neat sounds but the only way i started to develop it was by pressing some of the random buttons and going from there. i like audiomulch's format much better. i actually made a track using it that i upped to mp3.com but it's taking a while before it shows up on the page. if it's cool (as in, acceptable to do so on this list) can i let you guys know when it's up? i just wanna see if it's a decent track because i don't trust my thinking anymore ;). peace, shaun Ian Doyle wrote:

i think the problem with granular synthesis is understanding what a "grain" is. it works great with tangible things, but music? nuh uh. although yes, the random procedure is a nice way to get sounds. i get the impression that this is more along the lines of stuff to be "sampled". imo of course. cheers, \derek ----------- "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i aggree, i reckon the whole program has no definite structure, and really no theory behind it....it's wayyyy too confusing, even the full version has less functionality.

just uploaded some songs that use granny synthethis and odd fiiltering, witness the detruction and time warp it allows. somewhat novelty/experimental tracks to me, i'm working on arrangement and techniques. private comments if you listen. joe www.mp3.com/chaoshaman --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

a grain is just a sample of audio, usually between 1-1000ms long (0.01 is possible aswell, but pointless), this grain of sound is repeated, however many times you want, and then it moves onto the next grain (and often each grain is given an individual envelope to make the end result less harsh) the advantage of granular synthesis is that you can pitch shift a sound without changing is speed, or timeshift a sound without changing it's pitch..... but i don't think it should be limited to samples, BT uses it quite a lot to good effect.....
