funny one. shouldn't indulge but... hell. that one, that track, 'luke
vibert can kiss my white boy indie punk ass' or whatever... kid did
it for the 'i'm so bored with the usa' comp on diskono. don't think
it made the 12" but i believe it's on the 7". it's mainly one loop
taken from plug's 'cheesy (amen mix)' track from the plug 2 ep. i
don't think he knew even what or where from he was sampling. he
explained over the phone when i first heard it that he had just
sampled it from a mixtape. i told him it was a bad idea, to just gank
a whole chunk of a plug track, programming intact, dusp it up a bit
and put it out on a comp. apparently he thought differently. enough
so to mock the very fiber of his work.
odd set of morals on that kid. there's a track on a diskono comp he's
done called "there's a reason you all speak American yet we don't
speak any of yr silly languages[4:15] ". i find that a little
unsettling, even if entirely intended as tongue in cheek. one can
only hope his superiorist nationalist tendencies don't creep (i.e.
eminem's gay bashing heavily affecting thought patterns amongst his
academically underprivelidged fan base).

I hear that Rjyan's second full length 'Role Model' is being
hurriedly assembled by service-bureau folk even as we speak. It's
about as Pickle/Jelly as you can get from Kid's monsta gabba crunch.
This one's been floating around on self-propigated cd-r for some time
and absolutely SMOKES imho (imho: in my humble opinion, hopefully
taken for granted in these pomo 'x is shite, y is scheiße' times.
let's say it again: imho. even imo would suffice. let's dig those out
of the e-shorthand coffin). Some of the best laid plans for a new IDM
blueprint/derivation/mutant: intense hip hop flavored percussion
crunch with multiple ambient casio melody layers, often eschewing the
stock A->B->C->D->A' sort of formic tomfoolery that makes Drusca and
myself choke. Plus an all-too-necessary sense of humor when needed.
But aside from the easily analyzed aspects of music, Rjyan's just
works for me, on an emotional level. Well into it, hope he gets the
chance to turn heads outside of us few informed internal citizens. A
right heir apparent to the throne (in policy and sound) in Lex's
assumed hibernation. We'll leave it at that.
Just wanted to say, whether it's even IDM-relevant or not (seriously
starting to think not), that the Transmissions festival down in North
Carolina this past weekend was a peach. Never have I had the pleasure
of experiencing a more docile, patient crowd (esp. what with the
manhood-challenging array of near-(e)motionless laptop manipulation).
Highlights included Fennesz set to marathon Galaga, Zammuto's spotlit
file cabinet, Vote Robot's mystery-method mockery, rhBand's excellent
dronewerk, Marcus Schmickler and Kim Cascone's barren landscapes, and
Dean Roberts' songsmithy. Many a head in attendance (props to
Syndrone) and other than Fahey's constant 'church of Grubbs' babble
and subsequent loss of ride not an awkard moment to be found. Highly
recommend descending on a certain sleepy Michael Jordan-aligned town
next year when the opportunity arises... -Våt
