Who's John Herndon though? I had a brief squizz at www.heftyrecords.com to
see if he was one of that lot, but couldn't find his name amongst the
artist pages.
John Herndon is one of the core members of Tortoise, based in Chicago. I am
sure that at least some people on this list have listened to Tortoise and
all of their related side projects(Isotope 217, Sea and Cake, Five
Style......) at some time. They present elements of jazz fusion,
electronics, minimalism(a la Steve Reich), dub, indie rock,etc.......I hope
more people will make the leap and check them out.
As far as the Hefty records thing, the label is run by John Hughes III. I
am trying to figure out if he is John Hughes's son(director-Pretty in Pink,
Breakfast Club, etc.) I guess a email will have to be sent.
John Herndon recently scored a movie for John Hughes called Reach the Rock,
which is why i am making this connection. Scott Herren (Savath+Savalaas,
Delarosa+Asora) kinda sounds like Tortoise and has released a LP for Hefty
which i should get in the mail tomorrow. He is from Georgia and has
collaborated with Richard Devine as well. Again, a connection was probably
made somewhere......on that note, check out the Slicker remixes on Hefty,
out now.
John Herndon and Tortoise also produced Stereolab's Dots and Loops.
Jim O' Rourke produced the newest Stereloab and the new Sonic Youth.
Jim O' Rourke is also from Chicago and has collaborated with the Mego guys
for some live laptop improv. and at least one cd has been released on Mego
as well.
See how all these things get intertwined after a while?
