no, i've not heard odd jobs.. my thoughts on ischemic folks are not reflections of my feelings towards the artists.. i've heard other devine and PBO and liked them. i just think the track selection on Iscemic Folks is really poor and the compilation is boring... - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu " The ball is round. perhaps you didnt like the richie devine track on this too much? i liked his stuff when i first heard it,awesome percussion. but does it seem like, to anyone else, that he's released the same track, with the same samples, maybe 4 or 5 times now? just slightly different. dont tell me i dont appreciate subtlety. i do. everything ive ever heard from him, he uses the same exact sounds, same structure. as well as the 2 times i saw him live , every track ive heard him do. same sounds. some different ones maybe, but usually, same ones. wells said it. boring.

Well, Well, Wells, If you really get into 'Intelligent' Dance music, then you would be the first to realise the '(lack of') intelligence behind comments like "this is just lame. Boooring" Sounds more like a 12 year old trying to comment on a bad lolly. Perhaps a more specific (detailed) comment on what aspects of the music you did not like would be better, and more intelligent! Just to reflect another opinion on the album that I picked up in an IDM review list: V/A, Ischemic Folks Schematic Released: May 1999 Twelve tracks strong, this All-American collection is one of the most impressive electronic music (read: IDM) compilations to come along since Warp's Artificial Intelligence or Skam's Skampler. i don't like ischemic folks because it sounds heartless and because i've head better from a lot of the artists involved. the music is not very engaging. of course, it's obvious that the opinions above are equally as subjective as the proposition "the record is boring" so i'm failing to see how backing up the original claim with these claims lends any more weight, so i usually refrain from doing so. but anyway. lfo's frequencies is still a really nice album, by the way. - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu " The ball is round. OK, Point taken. Perhaps you might take time to appreciate this classic release, especially the Richard Devine and Push Button Objects tracks. It took a while to wrap my head around Thomas Brinkmann at first but once the flavours mature in you ears, the music is irresistible. Mark my words, in a few years time this will be a highly collectible item with rarified appeal! (well part of it) SCH001 is pretty kick ass. the rhythm is just fun. i hated Sixto Novation (except the graphic designs for the labels and sleeve. the gray vinyl went great w/ it!) but bought the 1st Metic EP anyway. its about the only thing i like from Schematic. everything else i've hear (which isn't a whole lot, but enough to leave that vomit taste in my mouth) was just shit. so anyhow, why does the Amazing Discographies page call the 1st Metic EP "Matrix Blaster". could some one w/ the original issuance of it help me clear this up? is it really called that, and do the tracks have names? back// ?-???-? my copy of sch-001 is on black vinyl with unmarked silver centers. the cardboard is silver too and has a schematic sticker on it. neatly hand-written in red on the white record sleeve are the words "metic - matrix blaster ep." there's no other info. not a bad ep, but i'd take jeswa's _skone_ (sch-004) over it any day. as for new music, i can't recommend kit clayton's _nek sanalet_ (~scape) enough. it's got a nice range of sounds on it, from highly (mis)treated, spooky voice samples to sharp rhythms (think of the best moments on karaoke kalk) to harmonically-rich analogue synth tones. track 2, "purpakana" sounds like the kind of track you hoped would be on the various artists remixes album on fat cat (but wasn't). i'm also digging the eog 12" on djak-up-bitch. slightly dirtier and with more intricate drum programming, but not overly distorted or complex. one track ("birdwatch") has a lazy downtempo feel to it which adds a lot to the overall quality of the record. phase np: isan - salamander --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i wouldn't defend schematic even though i do like my coffee stained copy of _ischemic folks_ all right, but without having even heard these tracks, i would suppose that they are probably meant to be this way: i.e. the same sounds might be used from composition to composition, but so what, if you get to actually explore these sounds & it works. mondrian took the same basic 4 colors in the same exact sort of structure & it worked. the richie devine sound works? why change it? or at least this is what i think he thinks. that said, i'm not advocating this working process as it does lead to often boring results. justifying art doesn't make it any less boring when it is boring to start with. but you're all the better for understanding the motive. blah blah blah blah as if anyone cares. :) ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have to agree. I was hyped for the release because of the roster, but frankly, the tracks aren't top choons in my book. They are too noodly and unfocused and uninspired. This is becoming a mediocre style like drill-n-bass was a couple of years back. Other Schematic releases get me going but not this one. Did anyone catch the 20' to 2000 webcast? I had problems connecting to the server. Would have been a great event to see in person.
