hi kidz, sorry, i've had the flu and am therefore trying to compile comments on the last 8 million digests into one email, but.. Re:Kraftwerk, since they got discussed lots: just thought i'd mention again the Komputer album "The World Of Tomorrow" which came out on Mute a while back.. someone said they were London art college tutors, which fits pretty well with my image of the kind of people who want to be Kraftwerk (William Latham with cords?) Anyway, Komputer is as 'tribute' as tribute can get. I seem to like this just as much as most Kraftwerk, but that's cos i'm a dunderhead(tm) - but it's pretty cool, especially "Bill Gates" (repeatx10000) - and MTV's "Webriot" ads have been using music-clips of "Valentina" by Komputer recently, I believe. Also, being a UK person who's just moved to the US, i find the difference in 'idm' listening tastes quite fascinating. i think it's something to do with the influences of industrial and experimental music from the US (and, indeed, dronerock). It's very difficult to define and i'm going to decline from nominating any specifics because there's lots of exceptions - but does anyone know what i mean? US idm started with Captain Beefheart whereas UK idm started with Dr. Alex? :) Finally, I was reading a Hunter S. Thompson article compilation a couple of days back and found a quote reference (a politician?) to (slightly reworded, mind..) "I'm No.1, So Why Try Harder?". Then I remembered that one of Norman Cook's other bands is Freak Power (another Hunter S. Thompson talking-point, natch..) And then, of course, Freak Power's big single was "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out." You see, the technicolor drug underworld is closer than we all think. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much other surrealistic drug-writing input into anything remotely 'idm' - although there's the brilliant Justin Warfield rap dealing with William Burroughs and "The Naked Lunch" on "Bug Powder Dust". But, umm, I digress.. pass me the ink blotter, h0l. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

:) UK idm actually started with Steve Hillage and Gong in the 70's. Alex Patterson was probably listening to this before he started producing. Alex Patterson + Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy from Gong started the first System 7 projects. And by the way, try some Douglas Rushkoff.
