Aside from some tracks sent out to members of the Betternoise list on a
comp CD, Dymaxion have done three seven inches on the Duophonic, Roomtone,
and Hemiola labels. The Duophonic record can still be found, the others are
long gone (I know, I had to beg Daniel of RoomTone to bestow a test
pressing of the RoomTone single to me; after extensive whining, he caved
in). All the singles are totally amazing, very original and strange
collisions of jagged riffs and stabs, timing changes, unpredictable
textures/arrangements and a very "pop musique concrete" vibe overall. What
really sets this band apart is how they make their songs. As I hear tell
from their ex-drummer Douglas, a woman named Julia makes collages and cut
ups in the program Sound Edit out of other people's records and then the
band learns how to "play" her collages live. I've heard great things about
their live shows- sometimes they all wear masks, at other shows someone
will sit reading a magazine on stage for the entire set and play one
instrument for one song, lots of changes of instrument. Wish they were
coming to SF with Stereolab.
