just realized my new panasonic dvd player won't play any of my CD-Rs. of course, this is mentioned in the manual with the list of other more obvious formats it doesn't like, such as PAL discs, Divx, and cd-roms. is this all dvd players, or just panasonic's? anyone understand the technical reasons, behind this? if my old cd player recognized the cd-rs as music discs, why does the dvd player think any different? after all, it does play music discs. time to break out the discman or burn all my cd-rs to minidisc. damn! ---------------------------------------------- D is for Desond thrown out of a sleigh ---------------------------------------------- bruce levenstein bruceLev@mindspring.com ---------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Not sure why that would be. I have a pioneer dvd myself, and it reconizes cdr's just fine. Only thing it that it doesn't reconize the speed of the dvd rom as a 40x cdrom, it reads it as 1x when I'm ripping tracks. AtL-5

I guess he meant a stand-alone DVD player, not a DVD-rom - most of those (DVD-roms) are of course supposed to play CD-Rs... the thing with stand-alone DVD-roms not being able to read CD-Rs might be to prevent playing of pirated VCDs... -- Kurt B Pruenner Haendelstrasse 17 4020 Linz/AUSTRIA http://www.mp3.com/Leak np: Phoenicia - Thong (Randa Roomet EP) (And before anybody starts pointing out that it's really Phoen_e_cia, it's "Phoenicia" written all over the CD, and I'm going by that... =P) WARP Records http://www.warprecords.com/ BUZZ 1&2 http://www.buzz2.com/ User Friendly http://www.userfriendly.org/ Segfault http://www.segfault.org/ Anime On DVD http://www.animeondvd.com/ Slashdot http://www.slashdot.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is the word from the DVD FAQ, located at http://www.videodiscovery.com/vdyweb/dvd/dvdfaq.html <quote> [2.4.3] Is CD-R compatible with DVD-ROM? Sometimes. The problem is that CD-Rs (Orange Book Part II) are "invisible" to DVD laser wavelength because the dye used in CD-Rs doesn't reflect the beam. Some first-generation DVD-ROM drives and many DVD players can't read CD-Rs. The common solution is to use two lasers at different wavelengths: one for reading DVDs and the other for reading CDs and CD-Rs. Variatons on the theme include Sony's "dual discrete optical pickup" with switchable pickup assemblies with separate optics, Sony's dual-wavelength laser (to be initially deployed on Playstation 2), Samsung's "annular masked objective lens" with a shared optical path, Toshiba's similar shared optical path using an objective lens masked with a coating that's transparent only to 650-nm light, Hitachi's switchable objective lens assembly, and Matsushita's holographic dual-focus lens. Look for drives with the MultiRead label, which guarantees compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW media. An effort to develop CD-R "Type II" media compatible with both CD and DVD wavelengths has been abandoned. DVD-ROM drives can't record on any media. Current writable DVD drives (see 4.3) can't record on CD-R, although future versions may be able to. </quote> brucelev wrote:
