I saw Oval play last year when he opened for Tortoise at the 9:30 Club in DC; seeing him live only made me dislike his music even more. He stood behind some PC moving the mouse and making a bunch of clicky-click-CD skipping sounds with some occasional bass sounds. Real fucking gimmicky. It was a perfect opportunity to go put some Tortoise records I'd bought in the car. Jeff

well, anything Tortoise has doen after Millions Now Living has been complete shit. no joke. TNT is so awful, taking all of their influences (ennio morricone, bad jazz, mouse on mars and some other shit) and throwing it all together to make something spectacularly worse then what they stole from. Tortoise versus The Ex is unlistenable, and the madison ave 7" is bad too. basically tortoise have noe great album (millions now living) one great 12" (gamera) and one great 7" (why we fight) the rest of their catalogue both before and after is crap. i don't know why i wrote this steve In a message dated 10/20/99 4:45:54 PM Pacific Daylight Time, glueslabs@earthlink.net writes: << I saw Oval play last year when he opened for Tortoise at the 9:30 Club in DC; seeing him live only made me dislike his music even more. I can't be sure what it is about TNT that turns so many people off instantaneously - my reaction was similar though not so extreme - but like several others I've met, the album has grown on me _considerably_, and now I like it quite a bit. I think it's the conglomeration of influences you mention, and the fact that it's too "accessible" (two things that seem to signal music I usually don't care for and set off certain stereotypes, but are not inherently bad at all I don't think). The new oval is much more "structured" btw... and accessible... which had the opposite effect on me. jon ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? unless you like the ex - in which case it's a decent EP by them with tortoise crapping it up by making little "dubby" chicago-wank noises on it.
