Quite a slew of shows in SF this weekend - Had an early start on Thursday with Art of Noise. Didn't expect much, but they were the first group I was seriously into, so I had to check it out. Let's just say I'm glad I got the chance to see them before they break up for good. Paul Morley ranted a bit, Anne Dudley played decent keys, and the opera singer was amazing, but their attempts at updating their sound with d&b didn't quite work for me. Friday was Lamb. Incredible. The crowd was up for it and the 4 piece live arrangement responded perfectly. Quite a bit more memorable than Fear of Fours. Saturday - Innerzone Orchestra. They've been beset with problems this tour [poor turnout in Buffalo, Hurricane Floyd keeping people away from the NY show, and a cancellation in Seattle] but they turned in a stellar performance. Recloose played a very solid DJ set leading into the Innerzone trio showing how to make live techno interesting - yeah, that's it, you actually play instruments and play off each other. Far more texturally varied than the Paperclip People show last year. Common Factor also played live and was impressive. A bit more tech than his records and well worth checking out. Sunday - Richie Hawtin. Matthew pretty much nailed it. Percussively dense and kinetic techno with very few other elements effected and mixed with a 909. When he broke down to 909 solo, mixing patterns on the fly, the energy was phenomenal. Joe At 9:48 AM -0700 10/11/99, Philip Sherburne wrote:

i made it out to see richie hawtin last night. that was my first time seeing him spin. it was pretty fucking dope. especially when he was using the 909. some of those beats were just plain amazing. if i was going to categorize the majority of the tracks played-- to me it kinda sounded similar to what oliver ho is doing at the moment. real tribal-esq. heres the part where i felt kinda stupid: they open the main room at 11. i walk in there and heres this bald, sorta skinny, wearing glasses (not thick rimmed black ones, but glasses none the less) white dude which i assumed was richie hawtin. "hmm, i guess hes gained a little weight since i last saw a picture of him, different glasses too.." so for the first two hours or so im thinking this is richie hawtin spinning. then around 1 the real richie hawtin shows up. as soon as i saw him i could tell he was actually richie hawtin--looked just like every picture ive ever seen... anyway both guys are dressed alike--black shirt, lite colored pants... bald heads... i felt pretty stupid. did anyone else figure this out? or am i the only one who was gullible enough...? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Mon, 11 Oct 1999 09:48:01 -0700 Philip Sherburne <philip@Ask.com> writes:
