the fourier transform of a discrete signal (ftd) produces a continuous spectrum and requires condsiderable computation. by contrast, the discrete fourier transform (dft) produces a sampled spectrum in that the frequency and phase (or real and imaginary) responses are computed for descrete frequences. this requires less computation than the continuous spectrum of the ftd. the fast fourier transform is a rapid method of calculating the dft.
