Event makes really good cards (Gina, Darla, etc.) that have varying features and prices depending on what you're looking for. Emagic has the AudioWerks 8 soundcard for use with Logic Audio, lots of ins and outs with that one but I believe it only works with Logic audio (Which isn't a bad thing if you own the software). Stop by your local sam ash or guitar center and see what they've got. -andrew -- http://www.calvin.edu/~asmith89/ Newer, Leaner, Faster

I also very much want to know what the best set up is. In short, what I want is a computer with soundcard and some software, and maybe a DAT machine. The only other hardware I'm prepared to buy is a basic keyboard for MIDI input (ie. a box of switches) and I've often thought it would be nice to have a box of sliders which had the feel of a mixer but connected straight to the computer and contained no audio hardware itself (I realize I would probably have to make that one myself). It often seems to me that, since CDs run at 41kHz and most PCs run in the MHz range, there should be more than enough processing power in the average PC to do music. If the right software is available (and fortunately these days it seems at last it is) there should be no reason to have boxes and boxes or racks full of hardware. Extra hardware should only be necessary if it improves the interface. d0ktor -----Original Message----- From: wells <s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu> To: idm <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Friday, August 13, 1999 5:48 PM Subject: (idm) all this talk of computer-based song writing.

you're mistaking 'doing' & 'playing'. any half-decent computer can play a cd (provided you have a sound card), but a 286, even though it's in the mhz range, will have a hell of a time _rendering_ your song into a wave file, which takes a lot more computational power than just playing it. that said, any pentium-based computer can run most current software to professional results, so i'm really just picking here. -- david

there is a mailing list called moving parts that discusses these set-up/hardware/software questions. here is the blurb about it: "The Movable Parts mailing-list is dedicated to the discussion of electronic dance music production and all related topics, such as patch programming, drum-machine programming, production tips, discussing already-released music in a technical sense, `trade secrets', getting records mastered and pressed and whatever else you feel is relevant to the topic. The list is designed for anyone with a real interest in the subject; whether you are an established producer, just starting to gather equipment or simply wanting to know more about how to go about it." you can sign up for it at: http://www.techno.ca/communication/lists/movableparts/ ptr

Depends on what you want to do with it. Turtle Beach makes some nice ones, but they're not cheap. Still, my Fiji sounds SO good... jeff wells wrote:
