Geoff, Son, you need to run, don't walk. to your local record store and buy some compilations! You have a lot of listening to do... Here are a couple of comps that are fairly wide-ranging in style, but consistent in quality, at least in my opinion. I'm assuming that you would be listening to stuff on CD. The Rumpus Room (Ninebar NOZACD01) The Future Sound Of Jazz (Compost 017) And finally, don't forget to pick up Blech (Warp 044), which is everything Warpish expertly mixed together by the Coldcut people. When you get those, read the credits of the songs you like really carefully, and note the songwriter(s) and the labels. These two items of information are what will allow you to find good stuff in the future. -Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

G'day, I'm a newcomer to this list, and was wondering if any list members might be able to recommend some new music for me. At the moment I'm into Orbital/Underworld/Chemical Brothers, but I'm always on the lookout for more (hope I didn't offend too many people with mention of the above groups). I also just purchased '76:14' by Global Communication - not bad, but comes a bit close to Tangerine Dream for my liking. I love techno/trance that just *sounds* fantastic - I don't frequent clubs or anything, I'm just into the music. Not really into jungle, though. Hopefully that might give an indication as to what I might like, and explain my ignorance about things that you all seem to take for granted. What can anyone tell me about Darren Emerson's DJ Mixes 'Pyschotrance 2' and 'Textures'? Had a listen to Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works II' the other day - didn't do much for me, I'm afraid. Maybe I should give it another listen. I know it is regarded as a classic of this genre. How does 'I Care Because You Do' sound like, in comparison to SAW2 and as opposed to, say, Orbital? I didn't mind Speedy J's new one - a bit short though. I saw an import copy that came with a bonus CD, but no info. Can anyone tell me what that bonus CD is, and what's on it? I see a fair bit of Sven Vath and System 7 around the shops, but I'm yet to listen to either (well, I had a listen to an Underworld remix of Sven Vath, but it contained a really annoying sample all through the song - kinda like a siren - which just annoyed me). What's the opinion of these? What labels are generally considered to have the most interesting tunes? I haven't heard much of FAX or WARP (apart from Speedy J). Any others? Who are the most interesting artists? Forgive me if I seem to tread on a few toes with my opinions here - I'm just trying to lay out what I've heard, what I thought, etc as a background, so that hopefully other people will have an idea as to what I might like to seek out in the future. Cheers, Geoff

Ive been grooving along to Subsurfing's "Frozen Ants" CD which fits that description *perfectly* (produced by an Orb member).. I know CDnow.com has it FWIW Another one you may consider is the new "Foreign Terrain LP-1". That one reminded me of dubby orb sample madness.. ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

Simon-- If you don't own it already, check out "Planet Of The Shapes" [I think that's the title] from Orbital's second album [the brown one]. It's my favorite track by them; it features a sampled sitar [from a Suns Of Arqa song, Phil Hartnoll once told me--though he wouldn't reveal which one, the sneaky bastard] and a spoken-word sample of the hippy from the film Withnail & I ["Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day."]. It's not very dubby, but it's as trancey and middle-easternly psychedelic as anything I can think of in techno. Also, Transglobal Underground's first 3 albums have moments of the like you describe above. They're titled Dream Of 100 Nations, International Times and Psychic Karaoke. Probably most fruitfully, try just about anything on the WordSound label: Slotek, Spectre, Ebn E Sync, Equations Of Eternity (feat. Laswell and Mick Harris), etc. Dave Segal Managing Editor/Alternative Press Reviews/BPM/Reissue Redux/Origins Of Cool Secret Ions on WCSB Thursdays 9-11PM EST www.wcsb.org

Trance-adelic ... LOADS of stuff around, mainly on the trace end of the spectrum. Loop Guru were mentioned, as were T/G/Underground, whose newest one "Rejoice rejoice" isn't entirely shabby. Also try the new JOI : One and one is One, which has some good moments -"Fingers" being hailed as a floor filler... I've got a remix album titled "Global Sweatbox" (on Nation Records, also mentioned on this thread) with people like Weatherall/Drum Club/Sherwood/ Jah Wobble/Youth etc. remixing tracks by Space Cadets/Tribal Drift/Uzma/Pulse 8 etc, which I think would fit your bill. Also, a really nice Eastern feel for relaxing to is Jamshied Sharifi "A Prayer for the Soul of Layla" (Alula Records, 97). There's a Return to the Source '98 v/a comp on RTTS titled Ambient Meditations with Children of Dub / Quaid / Solar Quest etc which you might also enjoy. I *

I haven't heard the Orb remix you mention, but Loop Guru would meet your other criteria. Okay, maybe noy 'hefty' dub, but the rest is a fit. Try "Duniya", on nation records (NATCD31). - j -
