Just catching up on some older e-mails about the "old school ELECTRO" thread. I remember hearing these tracks (see below) for the first time and not quite sure what the hell it was! After listening to these on my gigantic BOOM box (anyone remember those?) on cassette's from radio broadcasts' on WTLC (Indianapolis,IN.). I still have them and from time to time I have been known to drop them into the old ALPINE tape deck. Play at Your Own Risk - PLANET PATROL Planet Rock - Afrika Bambatta and the Soulsonic Force Clear - CYBOTRON Jam On Revenge - NEWCLEUS Al-Naafiysh(the soul) - HASHIM etc. etc. etc. I would say that "Planet Rock" was pretty much everone's favorite with umpteen mixes of that floating around the country. Although not "electro" per'say, ZAPP's "More Bounce To The ounce" was a personal favorite and then later Herbie Hancocks "Rockit" and mixes shortly after breaking mucho ground! Gosh I feel somewhat "old" after dusting off those memories. BTW we just called this style "Electric Funk" or "New Style". _____________________________________ ---------------------------------------------~ Curt King cking@xnet.com COLUMBIA AUDIO Chicago,IL.USA.EARTH "Taste is the enemy of art" _____________________________________ ----------------------------------------------~

SWEET> Play at Your Own Risk - PLANET PATROL I havea Planet Patrol 12" called 'Cheap Thrills' which isn't up to much really, but it's one of a few records I have left from those days, ( along with cuttin' herbie ). The depressing thing about it is that I used to have quite a few of the street sounds compilations and the electro compilations. Still, there is a guy in my home town who has a complete set of these two series... I'd love to get them mp3ed, but that'd take a long time... -- hjw

I can't find this track on any of the electro compilations.I have the Street Jams: Electro Funk Parts 1-3(Rhino) and Electro Funk Vol One & Two(Priority). Is Al Naayfiysh and other more obscure tracks available that I have not noticed. I am a DJ so most of my attention(and money) is devoted to vinyl so I haven't shopped CDs in several months. Any realy incredible Japanese or European compilations? Have Mantronix seen reissues?

I have a '92 or '93 release of this track on a Network label (UK acid/bleep label that disappeared around '94) 12". It has a couple of bleepy remixes and then the original in full glory. The vinyl is clear and center label orange, sorry I don't remember the cat #.... I have to wonder if the bassdrum is as big on the original pressing, since the track sounds like it has '93 mastering rather than '83... no Robert Gordon remix tho' ;-( Solenoid

i can't say anything about any strictly electro compilations, but why not support the label that put this out as their first record? go to http://www.cuttingnyc.com and get it in various forms on the cd compilations sold from the site. it's still available on vinyl, which kind of exposes some ahistorical bent of the commonly-discussed labels (what does "out of print" say beyond the labels' having thrown their history to the moneyed collectors?).

"network classics" was some sort of reissue project they had going (though i do seem to see new ones every once in awhile). the only one that ever appealed to me was the one (also orange...hey!) with kevin saunderson's "the groove that won't stop" and paris grey's "don't lead me (neal howard remix)" - man, i got chills when i held in my hands ONE piece of vinyl containing two "fat chance" tracks (cf. under one sky). not sure why hashim appeared in this series (early on, too), but i don't live in england and there could have been some champion-esque licensing by network going on, none copies of which ever made in to the bins i ever dug.. eric onnow: bad religion, "no control" (epitaph)
