one guy, (really)hardcore drum'n'bass. no avantgarde, beat cut-up trickery like drill'n'bass stuff, but really nice beat sequencing none-the-less. he's got the best grasp of the relationship between the drum and the bass of any d'n'b artist out there. most other d'n'b allstars can be compared to a bad audio system: all bass and high levels with weak mids that don't support and connect them. by that i mean: others sound like they whip up the beat sequencing and the basslines on separate continents. anyhow, he's recently doing alot more downtempo, hard acid stuff. any other panacea fans out there? or am i singing unheard praises? what's a panacea? tomas

'The cure'. I'm a BIG panacea fan myself. I've had some pretty interesting conversations about him with lots of the top jungle producers in the UK, all of which think his music is absolute shit. Some of the funniest were from nico, whom panacea sampled aprox 85 percent of the sounds for his 'low profile darkness' LP from (the rest being from ae and a few other sources). Nico actually went into force inc in germany (with one of the makai guys, who are all scared of the force inc family) and asked them what the fuck was up with this panacea guy sampling all his records. They ended up giving him a remix to do of mike inc's 'love inc', which although he (and ed rush) did it, they weren't happy with, pulled all the mike inc samples out and turned it into the title track off the torque lp. Ooops, sorry for getting off the topic... Anyway, I haven't been entirely happy with the direction panacea has been going lately, mainly due to his overuse (just like everyone else) of 'two step' beats. Also, his slower stuff started out pretty good (check the tracks on the electric ladyland comps) but he seams to have petered out a bit. The last really good thing I remember hearing from him was the single on chrome with the makai rmx on the flip. Nice one, lots of good old rave noises! :-) brockout.

the only panacea ive heard is the one with the destroyed police car on the cover (twisted designs? cant remember...) anyway this one is very good. it seems like there was a lot of good jungle coming out a few years ago, but now i dont know what happened... everything sounds weak and cliche... if you do like jungle tho, you should check out UFO! 's new one on the thermal label (thermal 002) its the first innovative jungle ive heard in a long time! its got some amazing bass... yes. count me as one. your description of him was pretty accurate. don't know of too many other d&b producers who are as dark and powerful as panacea is. plus, he came across as a lovable oaf in the modulations documentary, talking about how his music scares the hell out of himself.

according to my dictionary: 1. a cure-all; a remedy for all diseases or ills. 2. an answer for all problems or solution to all difficulties. (raises hand) Some of his stuff on his albums hasn't been so great, I can kind of see where the "mindless" argument could be used- but his contributions to the Electric Ladyland series are just ridiculously good. After listening to his stuff all the british techstep just sounds, well, british. Tom
