I just want to let you all know that Slut Smalls by "The Two Lone Swordsmen" is one impressive piece of vinyl pressing. The two songs appear to be recorded over the full length of the 7" but depending on which of the 2 grooves you hit it plays song 1 or 2 ! Has this been done before ???

Damn! You beat me to it. I was just gonna post about this myself. :)

Yup. Off-hand, I can think of a Monty Python album and a De La Soul 12" that used the "two grooves starting from the beginning of the record" gimmick. This may be the first IDM-related record to do so, though. Greg

it has been done before, yes, but it's not done that often. a recent batch of techno and electro out of Detroit has used this pressing process. PS please post to idm@hyperreal.org and *not* idm-digest@hyperreal.org and *not both of them (which sometimes is done)* (anything posted to idm@hyperreal.org automatically ends up in the digest, but just posting to the idm-digest... address itself or posting to both makes things screwy for everyone). Thanks. Andrew :) "AXION Software (Paul Palse)" wrote:

As many have pointed out, it certianly has. Two others I can think of are Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains" (the two B-sides are interwoven) and the Sugarcubes "Regina" (on one of the many releases of this single, not sure which one). Yes, a lot of the recent Detroit records are using "X2" mastering, done by Ron Murphy of NSC (www.soundenterprises.com). I know UR, V-Max, Interdimensional Transmissions (the new Ectomorph record) and others have "X2" mastering. Check out the list of labels mastered at NSC - it's pretty impressive. Ron Murphy has had some sort of impact a lot of the Detroit techno past & present. Bill / dj marathon cl wrote:

ha, i knew you were a monty python fan. i still remember your biosphere review: "pining for the fjords" and: anyone (northamericans) see our beloved FatBoySlim on the Late Late Show last night? i couldn't get around the fact that the host kept referring to him as fatboyslim rather than normon cook. anyhow, it's good to see that my/our thoughts on him aren't without reason. this boy is clue-less. and: seeing that this list has such a large number Christina Ricci fans, she was on jay leno last night as well. i've got to wonder: where the hell did THOSE come from? she's just a little girl! tomas

Christ, even *I* didn't remember writing that. You frighten me sometimes, Tomas. :) Given the fact that the majority of IDM listeners seem to be geeky whiteboys, I expect there's a pretty high crossover with Python fans as well.

My sweetie was on TV and I *missed* it? Damn. And yeah, I know what you mean. She was such a skinny little thing in those Addam's Family movies. Who would've thunk that she'd become so... very. Yoink. Greg

Now what people need to do is push this idea further: do an album like this, with like 5-8 songs per side, and do them all in parallel tracks. I think that having a hip-hop 12" double-grooved like that would be a problem for DJs, like if your needle slips (heaven forbid!) you could end up playing a wholde different track. Or maybe that'd be an easy way to do transitions. (heh)

I was really surprised to hear him with a british accent. I guess cos he looks like a washed-up surfer, i expected him to sound californian. Stupid me. I though it was funny when Norman played one of the host's favorite songs by pressing a button on his computer. I thought he did a decent job of explaining to the clueless host how he actually makes music. "If you sample a whole song, you have to pay for it, but if you just sample a little bit, no one will know" or something like that. oh, just to blow my IDM cred, i just got "You've come..." and i'm digging it.

Fatboy slim? Clueless? I think he's made an album of the best party songs since Biggie died. Though Fatboy is far from IDM, more like really good SDM (S="stupid").

Please... of all the off-topic tangents to get onto, drooling (like this) is by far the worst. _________________________________ Adam Roesch / roesch@augsburg.edu University of Idaho / Moscow / ID / USA Visit my Fila Brazillia/Pork Recordings fan site: http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/pork/ "Because success needs killing" TRICKY
