hi. i'm new to the list. i just picked up my first squarepusher cd and i think it really sucks. anyone care to comment? jeff

I think that Squarepusher has moved into different areas of exploration than his "Feed Me.."-era stuff. It seems that free-jazz and or improv is a heavier element and only the funk and fusion jazzy sides of his music have been transplanted to this new stuff. I think that free-improv can be done very well, I just wouldn't recommend Sq' as the best in that sort of thing. As I see it, he has moved from an area of music in which he was top of the heap into one where he is much less so. That makes sense when you think that one of the best improv/fusion/jazz players who might start trying programming drum machines for drill/drum-n-b isn't going to sound phenomenal necessarily... people should accept that Jenkinson just wants to move on, of course, even if it ain't their cup of tea. It has its moments, but unf they're too far between for me to care. To hear some rotted one note-like music that works, check out budakhan mindphone, which i really kindof like, it has beats not just a bass-wank for an hour. Also, "Feed Me Weird Things" is i believe Squarepusher's greatest moment, nothing like Rotted One Note, it's really cool jazzy jungleish stuff. Like Amon Tobin but a lot better. which album? i don't really know much squarepusher stuff, but i liked some of the older material i heard. despite so many good reviews i read, rotted notes didn't do much for me. got 'budakhan mindphone' last week, and it is rather interesting. i should review it sometime.... jeff salamon wrote:

I have never actually heard it, but dont let that discourage ya, for if its like most other music out here, everyone has his/her shining moments! One cat, Aaron likes them so perhaps he could suggest others to U, that U may find more favorable! Hk!
