i recently aquired an Atari 1040 ST computer. it has MIDI in and out, so it must be good for something...it seems like i read an article where richard james said he used an atari at one time [??]... could anyone direct me to a website to download or place to aquire programs for sequencing music on this computer? or is it not even worth my time?? i also vaguely remember someone using a program [on what i think was an Atari] where the sounds you hear are according to what you draw with different colors..any information would be greatly appreciated!!! jon jsgd@computerland.net

Almost every old skool IMD has had an Atari 1040 ST computer. Amazingly it still is some's personal favorite. I don't own one, so I don't know. But I know that lots of people use some really old version of Cubase on it, I think 4 Hero uses Creator, and nothing else. From what I hear these are really primative and easy to use programs, mainly the reason why they don't give them up. I think Mike P. had one. Aphex, who knows? I know that some people on IDM's nemesis Fatboy Slim uses an Atari and is scared that the music will stop being made when his breaks down because he's afraid of new computers and what not. So it seems to be a pretty solid machine. I think I remember reading also that it was popular because it had that built in MIDI port. Plus it's bloody cheap. Rusty

The main reason a lot of IDMers swear by the Atari ST is that the MIDI timing is rock solid. There's some guy on the Logic list that does timing tests from time to time, and the Mac still isn't quite there, and Windows? The multimedia timer introduces all kinds of slop (seems to be better in Win98, but it still sucks compared to the Atari). Che "Aphex's records are now available via the BMG music club.
