As was the case with "Music is Rotted One Note", this is pretty good. However, if I was neophyte who had never heard any other Squarepusher release, I'd probably wouldn't even give it a second listen. Seems Tom Jenkinson is trying to find his "true" voice but instead of experimenting and refining his approach in private, he has decided to release these experiments. That is quite bold considering his previous audience seems to be wary of his direction. I wish him luck (his earlier releases are best of breed) but better musicians have been sunk trying this. Comments please!

I agree. I think it would be great if he could somehow incorporate his crazy, fast drum sequencing with his current style. That would be awesome! I guess the only problem is that it would be hard to do that with making the music sound less "serious" or whatever. But I'm sure Ton J. could do it... With some musicians, they give you the sinse tops. Guys like Squarepusher give you the tops, shwag, sticks, stems, and seeds, and lets you sort it out. There are things I like about Budokan Mindphone -- the stuff with breaks, and the gamelan piece at the end until I realized that the bass wasn't ever going to drup, and it was just going to meander and then stop. I also like that it came out domestic and I could get it for 8 bucks. As someone who makes tracks, it sometimes seems like Warp and Rephlex are going to release whatever DATs he throws at them unedited. I'd love to be in that position, but on the other hand I'd hope someone would weed out the wack tracks before enshrining them forever on CD. I can't imagine someone at Warp listening to this record and saying WOW this is the shit! Until and unless either TJ or his labels get serious about track selection, they run the danger of seeming like they are just capitalizing on his current noteriety, and devaluing his very real merits by dilution.

odd that folks give this a poor review.. i was pretty into feed me weird things, but after that, the SP stuff grew tiring for me.. budakhan mindphone, from just a quick listen, seemed to grab my attention much more -- in a, "what the fuck is he doing, he this is kinda neat" kind of way. but maybe i enjoyed the seriousness of it all? then again, i also am more impressed with rdj's window licker than i have been with any of of his other recent stuff.. so i guess tastes just vary :) chris. i am not daniel. i am not peach. i am not sterile. music, four lunchpails: wednesdays 7-8pm kuci 88.9fm www.kuci.org "chicks dig laptops"

What about if he has already experiemented in private and has come up with something that he wants to release? He has to take the plunge eventually right? ~crtrdge

I think Chair Crusher hit it on the nail when he suggested the labels should use discretion in choosing what Jenkinson tracks to release. 3 tracks from Budakhan Mindphone and 4 or 5 tracks from Music is Rotted One Note would have made an outstanding release. 90 minutes of this stuff is way too much.
