(I can confirm this story BTW. Ae is a big R8 user. It's all over the Anti EP, especially "Flutter") When you twist a knob in Rebirth it merely crossfades between samples. It's not even close to an emulation. Things like the attack and decay envelopes on the bass drums can be easily done in software by clipping the samples, but you're still going to get a static, very digital sound since you're only using samples. nick

Serious :-) alert HERESY! I think the real issue here is who gives a fuck? Do even 90% of the people who would ever buy a CD/LP/MD of ANY sort of music even know what a TR-808 or an RB-303 is? Ok, I'll up you one. I absolutely love the sound of those Moog modular synths that took up an entire room. So, every time I hear a Waldorf Microwave (oh yea, I can tell the difference :-) ), I just curl up in a ball and feel like dying. "Fraud!," I scream as tears stream down my face. The TR-808 is"Old Coke" and Rebirth is "New Coke."

First off, I'll be nitpicky here. It's a TB-303. And many who are familiar with electronic music know the sound of a 303. It's not hard to, since it's one of the most abused sounds out there. (I still love the 303 though BTW).

Sure. I love the Moog modulars too. But the Microwave is COMPLETELY different. If you were familiar with the architechure of the Microwave you'd know that it doesn't set out to be anything like a Moog modular. It's a totally different concept. The Microwave excels at harsh, metalic digital noises, and this is what it was designed for. It's no less of a machine, it's just different. different != worse. And on the 808 tip, it's pretty simple. If you want something close to the 808 sound, get one of the many software or hardware emulations. If you want the real deal, get it. ObIDM: I started out on Solar X with Alternative Frequencies 3, and the new CD is really great. I'm feeling rather fond of the "new acid" sound lately, in effect on the AFX/TJ song on WAP100, Chaos AD remixes and this CD. nick
