Underworld kick off their North American tour in NYC on Jule 18th at Irving Plaza - anyone know the rest of the dates? Also, according to Robin Rimbaud, MuZiq will be playing live inside the Brooklyn Bridge on July 20th along with DJ Spooky and then he (Robin) will be performing live as Scanner the following week in the same space... :: Alan M. another question. for those of you who have been to an IDM-artist's concert, what goes on? There can't be much dancing and i would assume there are some visuals. For example, what was the Black Dog 1997 Toronto concert like? Do you just sit at a table and listen or what? thanks

Why can't there be much dancing? Maybe not in America, but over here... certainly. There was much merriment and crazydancing going on at both Squarepusher gigs i've been to. And aphex's too.... -- Ben Coffer http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

All I can say about IDM concerts is - just go. If you like the music, you'll probably enjoy it.

I went to see Autechre in Vancouver last summer and it was kindof weird...the only lighting was a few candles on the stage, the crowd was very appreciative of the music but you're right, no one really (except me and some friends) danced, everyone just stood still, crammed at the front, with their jaws dropped, and everyone screamed when they would throw in an unexpected loud beat or a recognizable melody would come in...all in all it was THE best show I've every been to, it was completely amazing...it took us at least 10 minutes of LOUD screaming to get them to do an encore though...grrr...anyways, that was my experience... cya-------->mIkE

Some read, some dress as their favorite literaray characters, some pose. Many new dances are invented, not all involve movement. Sometimes surgeries are performed. jeff Sam Stein wrote:

here in toronto canada us IDMers are a reserved, selfconcious bunch i guess. at aphex twin there was too much entertainment with the dancing bears and all to concentrate on dancing. and at solvent/lowfish or panasonic we just stand there watching them twiddle their nobs. it's all rather silly, really. and that's why i don't bother going to these events anymore, the music just can't be appreciated in the same way as in the comfy setting of your bedroom. and then there's the ravers, they're a disgusting bunch. tomas

Laugh of the Day award goes to YOU :-) Is this for real, or could I not recognise irony if it smacked me in the face? Well, at least if you're looking for "chicks" you're more likely to find them at a rave than a live IDM event. Me? I swing both ways... I *

Actually, I've seen dancing at most *club setting* gigs I've witnessed through all types of music, no matter whether or not it was easily accomplished - in the US. Just because it's not a straight 4/4 doesn't mean it can't be danced to (which is why I got a bit creative in my first response...I thought the question was a little odd). jeff Ben Coffer wrote:

he he he, here in LA area same shit. Must explain why the OC crew has events like Sterile and Nightnoise and other smaller more shit-downish events. I don't think IDM was ever meant for a large CLUB/dance setting. read the first Artificial Intelligence and it says something like "music for when you get back from the club" I agree. Certainly, some foolios, like myself, can dance to Lexaunculpt, but most people when they hear LIVE IDM are either listening or asking their neighbor in the crowd "what the fuck kinda music is this" Thats great. IDM not causing a big crowd to dance has brought me to appreciate spinning electro. Many IDM trax have plenty of electro sounds and feel to them and they can be mixed with more traditional electro (ie something from IT or Seratonin) if you're good at DJ'ing (which I'm not). But for a LIVE performance I don't think the crowd can get into it as much. This is especially true since more and more musicians are simply bringing a laptop/Desktop computer to the gig and nothing else. It's kinda boring to watch some geek behind a monitor hit the spacebar and watch the sequencer/track player go by. of course, this wholve live-dancing issue is also dependent on which artists you're calling IDM? Pole, for example, had the entire EL Rey theatre moving, but his music sounded like AMBIENT to me. (ok, lets not debate on POLE and what genre he fits). My point is that he had a Laptop and no four to the floor. The Pole gig also did not attract the raver crowd. So what I wrote above doesn't always apply. Sometimes a dude with a laptop only can rock the house. Richie Divine on the other hand shocked everyone, there was any "dance" feel to any of his music. He too only had a laptop. So who knows. I guess setting, style of IDM, sound system, how many drinks the crowd has had, how old the crowd is, and other variables also go into whether a crowd will respond by dancing to a LIVE IDM performance. g
