Has anyone ported Csound to Be? Csound may quite possibly be the world's most powerful synth engine that no-one ever uses [mostly because making it work is suspiciously like programming]. Also, if anyone's ever used it, what were your opinions of Csound? Has the stand alone box ever appeared, 'cause I've never found one? {last year some time I read smething about some company porting it to a Harvard supercomputer chipset.} ~I~ ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. there is a _port_ of csound to Be, but it is just that, a port. AFAIK it isnt multithreaded or changed to take advantage of Be system architecture. doing so would/will take a lot of work. available at http://www.be.com/beware/Audio/Csound.html opinions on csound: there is this curve of capability versus complication, where they mutually increase one another. csound is the ugliest most amazing sound software you can use. I don't know what BEOS is, but I use Csound for DOS & Csound for Windows. Basicly, it is more like programming than using a physical synth because you do everything by typing up text files. It can be very slow to get anything done, but you get the more control over what you do & more possibilities than you would with any other approach. I think it's the best for doing things with inputted sound files. There is some really unbelievable stuff you can do to your recordings, & certain common things can be done with much higher accuracy & quality than with other methods, but all of this takes much processing power. Some things I do take hours to compile. These have been my brief thoughts on Csound. Marc Poirier
